Jeremy Fernando's prose -- or perhaps we should say, poetry -- builds effortlessly on the traces of deconstructive thought, feminist insights, and transgressive English literature. Being itself only hesitantly devoted to the conventions of academic writing, Fernando manages to show that faith and loyalty, but also doubt and disloyalty, are always co-operative in what is often too hastily expressed with the simple phrase "I love you." In doing so, Fernando's writing captures the essentially beautiful aspect of the hopeful awaiting and the necessary blindness that love, as well as such a writing, engenders, as it seeks to open up to the mysteries of human existence and even of existence as such. This work then, like his others, contains wonderful admissions of affection to the work of Derrida, Cixous, Agamben, Barthes, Bataille, and various identifiable and unidentifiable others, strung together in what finally constitutes a riveting read.

and perhaps this is how one's relationship with each book is -- with each person even, perhaps: that each one doesn't ever really comes to an end. each one is in a state of constant unfolding with each revisit, the beginning of each revisit always somewhat apprehensive, the phases between visits blur into each other. and while there may be lapses between each visit -- long lapses very long ones -- each revisit reaffirms the lapses are what they are: temporary only; each lapse only saying, 'allow us a moment of quiet to gently consider this possibility'.
the beautiful post-script, epilogue, final words, to the book, reads like one half of a dialogue, calls to mind a certain rhythm, almost a certain filmic quality; makes snatches at a certain familiar memory. it reminds of the way in which one would write a letter to someone dear, where one jumps from talking about one thing to the next even if they may be loosely or not even related; where it doesn't matter really what one is talking about, as long as one keeps talking ...
