About the Author
Steven Falk is a professional naturalist and conservationist with a particular love for insects. He has worked for the former Nature Conservancy Council, two large museum services, and a wildlife trust. He has been involved with natural history books since his teens, contributing colour artwork to books such as British Hoverflies and the Collins Field Guide to Insects of Britain and Northern Europe. He has also written many scientific papers, popular articles and a county flora for Warwickshire. He currently works for Buglife.
Over almost forty years, Richard Lewington has built up a reputation as one of Europe's finest wildlife illustrators. He first became interested in butterflies as a child when he inherited a cabinet of insects. He studied graphic design at the Berkshire College of Art, and since leaving in 1971 has specialised in natural-history illustration. His meticulous paintings of insects and other wildlife are the mainstay of many of the modern classics of field-guide art.

Well, if I'm honest, it's overkill for her needs, there is a massive amount of complex information crammed into quite a hefty tome, and the text is too small for her to comfortably read. She certainly wouldn't want to carry it as a field guide.
I'll take the blame for choosing a product clearly aimed at the expert, not an enthusiastic amateur.
One final thought, is it a good idea to instruct on the correct method of killing bees in order to identify them correctly, at a time when so many are in decline?
Like many I'd struggled for years with out of date keys and guides to narrow down the various bees I'd collected down to at least genus and sometimes (though not as often as I'd like) down to species. With the publication of this book this has now thankfully changed.
Falk's keys are simple and accessible with informative figures scattered throughout to help confirm identifications. The photographs beside the species accounts are excellent, and Lewington's artwork in the plates shines throughout.
Our knowledge of the range and ecology for many of these species may still be relatively poor in the UK and Ireland however in the coming years this is bound to change and Falk and Lewington can take pride in the fact that it will be largely down to this book.
At first glance, I knew, 'this is a winner' ! Second glance, 'I see it's by Steven Falk', who has produced the finest-ever work on British Hover-flies. And at no less impact - I then see the amazing illustrations are by Richard Lewington. Again, one who is not just considered the finest insect illustrator working today, but is half part of the finest work that is now available on - 'Butterflies Of Britain And Ireland'
Back to Bees. I just had to purchase the hardback version ! (from Amazon). A weighty tome that relates to the use of superb quality paper and beautifully finished in superb boards. It'll last for ever ! It's full of english names ! This is unbelievable - every specie has got a 'real' name. I have
never seen this. Apart from stumbling over identification, which I am coming to, I never got a grip on being able to pronounce latin - let alone spell it. The glossary, if that's the right word - brings everything together - perfectly. I spent this early spring, photographing early mining bees and such, then spent the rest of the year trying to fathom-out what I have snapped. This book arrived and this years 'catch' - and last years are all titled-up, with no feeling I've got some guesses in there. The book has opened-up a far bigger world of wild bees for me that I had ever realised. It has also opened my eyes up how I don't need to struggle to read-up on all the subjects about them. It is beautifully readable - that is my description. I must refer to the photographs. Full of colour plates that complete and fulfil the study of every bee. In fact there is loads of content that I should mention. It's best - please to understand that if this is your interest - you'll forever regretting not to get this book. As the rear cover says - it is a complete guide. Many books use 'A Complete Guide' as a seller phrase. But here - 'As it says on the tin - that's whats actually in it'. It is perfect.
I hope there won't be a sell-out and become unavailable. It is so good - it could . So - GET ONE OVER CHRISTMAS. Peter Moody.
Probably the ultimate UK bee identification book but the keys are long and tortuous. They usually require a dead specimen and a reasonable amount of magnification. A few can be identified from a series of high quality photos but you won't get anywhere if attempting identification just using a photo snap image.
