About the Author

Kurt Johnson resides in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he works as a naturalist and photographer. Kurt has been fascinated by wildlife since he was a young boy and even claimed (at age 4) that his professional aspiration was to grow up to be a monkey. This has yet to be achieved, but along the way he has acquired a B.S. in Wildlife Biology from Northland College, Wisconsin, and an M.S. in Natural Resources from Utah State University. Like many wildlife enthusiasts, an abundance of experiences has provided relevant opportunities for non-traditional education.

After working as graduate faculty for the Teton Science Schools, he began leading natural history programs in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem including wildlife safaris, photography safaris, nature hikes, Yellowstone excursions, and astronomy nights.

I had the pleasure of meeting the author as he guided me and my family in the Grand Teton National Park for two different tours; a photo and a nature tour. It was clear from the experience that his knowledge of the area, the wildlife, the ecology, and the ecosystem was comprehensive in both depth and breadth. We had no idea he had written the book until he barely mentioned the book. I had to ask him "You wrote this?". I wasn't surprised when he said yes, though I thought he shouldn't have been so reticent to discuss it!
After leaving the GTNP, we used the book several times while in Yellowstone and found it to be the perfect combination of usability and depth of content. The only regret I have is not having the book in advance of the trip to be able to plan the trip better.
In short, if you're going to either Yellowstone, the Grand Teton National Park or both, get the book!

I am a local wildlife/scenic tour guide throughout both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Kurt's book is always in my pack for trips and always in reach. As a guide, it is very useful to be able to show clients a picture of a pronghorn, have them compare mule deer and white-tailed deer, and also be able to show them wildflower pictures. The pictures are of great quality and show great detail for those unfamiliar with a particular species (whether it may be mammals, plants, insects, etc). This book seems to be multiple field guides wrapped into ONE easy to carry, easy to understand, and overall very informative guide. Kurt has put in a lot of hard work to produce a useful guide book for the everyday person. The content of the book ranges from geology to mushrooms and birds to thermal features....something for everyone! I would highly recommend this guide book for the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Kurt F. Johnson"d guide to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks has it all: birds, botany, mammals, night skies, foot prints, waterfalls, insects, butterflies, frogs and even scat identification. And all this information fits in a book whose size and cover design allow it to slip easily into my pack. I have never seen a field guide as complete and as user friendly.

I hope Johnson publishes more of these guides, hopefully one for each of our national parks.

Took this on a backpacking trip in Yellowstone. We were able to identify almost all animals, animal tracks and scat we saw. It has nice rounded corners so it doesn't get trashed too badly if you have it in a backpack. Highly recommended. They also sell this at the bookstores in the visitor centers in the park if you want to look at it before you buy, but it's a few dollars more there than on Amazon.

My family is planning on visiting Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks this summer and we have never visited these parks before so it is nice to have a detailed description of the landscape, as well as the natural history of the area. It is nice to have a guide which includes everything from the tiniest of flowers, insects, and reptiles to the large and small mammals. As well as geology and even stars. It includes clear photos of all of these which is great. I am so excited to visit the parks which have the most diverse wildlife in the USA. Thank you so much for this lovely book. The only flaw is I would have liked to have some more maps which show the best places to see animals. Also enjoyed the pictures of waterfalls and geysers.

This remarkable field guide combines an elegant and easy-to-use layout with in-depth coverage of virtually every aspect of the Yellowstone/Grand Teton ecosystem. Designed thoughtfully to carry easily on a hike, it provides an enormous amount of information on every aspect of the parks, from plant and animal life to the geology and geothermal features of the region to the night sky. The hundreds of photographs and illustrations are wonderfully detailed. Whether you already know the area well, or are planning your first trip there, this book will enhance your experience and teach you much. A perfect Christmas gift for anyone on your list who has visited or who hopes to visit Yellowstone or the Grand Tetons.

When compared to other field guides, Kurt's guide is very comprehensive. It's easy to read, he makes it easy to identify everything and his photos are amazing. Grizzly bear 399, who is famous in the Jackson Hole region graces the cover. I can't wait to get out and use it. This is a must have purchase if you are heading to the greater Yellowstone area. You will learn everything there is to know and more.
