Fields' Guide to Abduction: A Cozy Mystery Adventure (The Poppy Fields Adventures Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 3,319 ratings

A laugh out loud cozy mystery adventure by USA TODAY bestselling author Julie Mulhern.

For Hollywood influencer Poppy Fields, life is almost perfect. She wakes to sip coffee at her beachside bungalow, lunches with pretty people, and her name is on the list at all the right nightclubs. Also, she shops. Like, a lot.

When Poppy travels to Mexico, with six bulging suitcases in tow, she’s ready for anything—sunbathing by breath-taking infinity pools, gourmet meals at five-star restaurants, glittering parties on patios overlooking the Pacific. Too bad she didn’t pack for a deadly adventure.

But then again, what does one wear for murder?

Or kidnapping?

Or meeting a Chihuahua with the heart of a lion?

Turns out Poppy is more than just a Hollywood golden girl. But with death lurking around every corner, she'll need smarts, acting skills, and a lot of luck to make it back to Rodeo Drive.

What other authors are saying:

“Poppy Fields is in a tough spot. People are dying at a statistically significant rate after interacting with her, starting with her ex-boyfriend. Now a drug cartel is chasing her, the police have taken her passport, and that beach vacation where she was supposed to chill out has turned into a nightmare. Action, humor, great characters, and an intriguing mystery, Mulhern has packed a lot into this excellent mystery. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy!” ~ Julie Moffett, USA TODAY bestselling author of the Lexi Carmichael Mysteries

"The best book I've read this year!" ~ Gretchen Archer, USA TODAY bestselling author of the Davis Way Crime Capers

A Definite must read for all cozy lovers!
I really enjoyed reading this book! Poppy gets into a whole lot of really bad trouble but always manages to get out of it--somehow--! Lots of death follows her around along with a guy who she thinks is dead--which is why she agreed to go to that posh resort in the first place! I LOVED that little dog-a Chihuahua who likes very few people-there is a bit of comic relief as well.I am definitely looking forward to the next book in this series!!

This book deserves more than 5 stars. I have read all of her books in another series that I can't wait for t h e next book in that series, but this book is heart-stopping. I can't imagine the amount of research she did prior to writing this book. She is brilliantly, intellectually, creative both with the plot, the characters, and the storyline. She brings the main character to life, as she does the others. The realism had me holding my breath more than once. I love a mystery that's laced with reality and humor. Once I began reading I didn't stop until the final page. I've read a lot of mysteries in my life, beginning with Nancy Drew . This author's books deserve higher prices, although I'm pleased at the current price, I've read mysteries that are double what her books cost. The character is captivating and very independently selected sufficient in situations most of us couldn't imagine. One aspect of this author's work is she weaves her story plots around issues that currently face our society today. Most of us live in a bubble and have no idea of the less attractive and dangerous aspects of society. Within both of her series she weaves her story plots around things that are happening in the undercurrent of society. It alerts us to the reality of how beneath our comfortable, lifestyle, & even the affluence of our society, there is a world of danger and greed that threatens the safety of the very foundation of our country. In a previous series that dealt with wealth and appearances. In this book it deals with an affluent group of people that are making reckless decisions about drugs that they use to party, however it's a Billion dollar business that is feeding the Cartel and making billions from the flow of drugs & trafficking. It's far from harmless. The story is about that inner world that looks glamorous, but is anything but glamorous. The inner glimpse into the world of the Drug Cartel is an awakening and shatters every illusion that drugs are harmless. There are lighter aspects of humor mixed with all the undercurrent, such as how she acquired her little dog, that strikes fear in the hearts of hitmen and others is hilarious. Another common thread is that of her main man, and his situation was the reason she began this trip to forget him. Her mother is a beautiful actress, her friends know? are wealthy, and this trip was a plan to have fun, relax, and forget her main love....instead it's the beginning of an adventure that most of us would rather not take. Throughout the adventure she shows strength and how well prepared her father had trained her in order to survive in life threatening circumstances. I can't imagine another book in this series as exciting as this one, but having read all the books in a previous series it would underestimate this author's talent and imagination that I have the next book will be as exciting and captivating, if not more so than this story.....The little dog has to be in the rest of the series....Obviously I highly recommend this book....it's thought provoking, revealing, astute, and extremely creative.

If you are someone who enjoys reading about luxury resorts, designer clothing and shoes, the antics of less than successful offspring of uber-famous parents being paid to make appearances and be photographed with lesser known “stars” (ala the Kardashians or Paris Hilton) and, oh yes, a central character who seems to attract dead bodies like food at a picnic attracts flies then Poppy Fields is your gal and FIELDS GUIDE TO ABDUCTION is your cozy for this week.

After waking up in bed next to the body of an ex-boyfriend our girl Poppy is off to a paid vacation in Cabo for some R&R. Problem is her ex was just body number one and it appears that Poppy may be on her way to chalking up an even dozen before the week is out………if she doesn’t end up making the hit list herself.

This is an enjoyable romp with a protagonist who, while appearing a bit spoiled at times, uses her intelligence and charm to avoid less than favorable situations. Summer is coming and this is a perfect beach read…..fast paced fun and full of surprises.

The title is cute, but the whole book is stereotypical in nature and never fully fleshes out. Her relationship with her mother is a stereotype, her lifestyle, her best friend, the ex-boyfriend, crazy drug lord, the media... If Kim Kardashian wrote a book, it would be this one. I bought this book based on another author's recommendation and she writes really good books, but I almost want a refund because the characters and plotting were so poor. It seemed the author wanted to enter the writing world of an undercover series character and just could not make up an original, believable character or plot, but did it anyway and hoped the cutesy genre of cozy mysteries would be enough. Stereotypes are not funny by themselves, but clever characters and good plotting get you everywhere. Kudos to the author for trying, but I think this poppy should be mowed over.

I wasn’t sure what I expected when I got this, but it was delightful.
The abduction doesn’t happen right off the bat, which made the anticipation all the greater.
I really enjoyed this book.

A film stars daughter gets asked to attend the opening of a posh resort in Mexicp. That is about the only normal event in this fast paced book. Julie Mulhern has written a attention grabbing novel that ends with a good link to the next in the series.

This is a mad caper during which the heroine finds her calling.
If you enjoy screwball comedy mixed with a side of thriller, mad shootouts and a crazy dog, this is a must read.
