Told in flashback, we learn about the horrific events that cause Helene to leave her father's home and start a new life in Paris. We also find out how one man's kindness allows her to start anew in Argentina. This is the point where we met Madame in the second book.
Then, it is the present and Richard, the male protagonist who is in all three books, finds out that his teenage daughter that he abandoned along with his wife and sons, has been kidnapped. The kidnapper is really after Madame and uses Richard to get her.
This book delves into the more personal lives of the characters and ties up all loose ends. It ends where it begins.
The first book seems to stand more alone than the second two. The second two really read as one long novel and should be read in order. It just makes more sense that way.
There is also some French political issues that might be confusing for some readers. I didn't understand some of the geo-political events that surrounded the plot.
Also, there is a rape scene in the beginning of the novel, but it's not graphic.
I'm sorry that this is the end. I'd love to see more from these characters.
With a delicious ending and a foe to leave you wondering, this book is a must for all lovers of mystery (or anyone just feeling like a brain twister).
