IMHO, it's too big to use a dinner plate, as I think reasonable portions would be seem too small on it. However, I could see using it as an over-sized buffet plate if no other dishes (bread & butter plate, salad bowl, etc) are being used. If you need to stock up for a large crowd, look into the case of 12.
Fiesta is still made in the US, for those who care about that. Most pieces come in white or ivory, for those who don't like the colors. It's very sturdy, DW & MW safe, and a good value.
