Editorial Reviews

Everyone has a different way to relax after a hard day of work, and for Pat Sansone and John Stirratt, the best way to clear their heads after playing to thousands of people for weeks on end was to find time to craft Fifth, the latest immaculately rendered pop opus from their long-running duo The Autumn Defense. Confident grooves underly the duo's masses of harmonies and carefully layered guitar chimes for what the pair consider one of their most varied efforts to date.

Hard to believe that in 2014 with music at it's worst ever that an album could come along that should be heard by the masses that is actually brilliant well written and thoughtful MUSIC. If you love songs with great chord changes and Beatles style guitars and solid vocals then this cd is for you. It's only January but I dare say that it's highly unlikely that a finer album will not be released again this year unless Autumn Defense decides to release two in 2014.

I have about 3000 LPs in my collection. This one is the very best sounding one of them all. if all 45rpm 12" records sound this good, I will have to buy more. Fortunately for this audiophile, the music - a mashup of Beatles, Hollies, and Posies melodies and harmonies - is fully up to the task. This is one record you can put on to show off your stereo while not putting everybody to sleep in the process.

Wilco’s Pat Sansone and John Stirratt’s side project has long taken on a life of its own, with each succeeding release improving on its predecessor. Autumn Defense’s stylistic lineage is harmony-laden vocals, acoustic-guitar moccasins with electric-guitar lacings, and lyrics with a melancholy, wistful air. Think CSNY, the Byrds, Kings of Convenience, and even America. Most of the songs are mid-tempo ruminations, beautifully arranged, delivering new elements with repeated plays. However, the crackerjack surprise is “Things on My Mind,” which adds a Tom-Petty-ish crunch and some really cool phasing effects. Maybe if Wilco were the side project, albums like these would get the recognition they really deserve.

Being a fan of Wilco, years ago I decided to try this side project by bassist John Stirratt and mulch-instrumentalist Patrick Sansone. This is their best effort because of the consistency, both in the writing and playing. The harmonies are wonderful and the music sticks with you after the songs have finished playing. The album certainly owes a debt to early 70s singer-songwriters, but the music has a modern sheen.

In the past I've found Autumn Defense records to be a bit too mellow and slow, but with this release they've added some up tempo material. Keep in mind the up tempo material bears scant resemblance to Wilco's rock excursions, but instead lopes along as a faster James Taylor tune might. Looking to the past, but keeping the sound still modern and relevant, this new offering by the Autumn Defense has terrific harmonies and is great music for a lazy afternoon.
