If you never read The Four Agreements, they are discussed, each in its own chapter in The Fifth Agreement - and with a depth and clarity that goes beyond the author's fathers original work that so many of us treasure.
If you are buying just one book on personal/spiritual development, this is the book to get.
beautiful Practical Guide to Living. Some months ago I read The Four Agreements and listened also to it read by Peter Cayote's excellent rendition of it. The CD, in my opinion, brings the message of the book to life. Being impeccable with one's word, not making assumptions, not taking things personally and doing the best one can (the four agreements) become clearer as one works to understand the Fifth Agreement of having an open mind ( being positive in your critical observations) combined with the art of listening to others. I love the message of this book and it is one that I will reread since it has a depth of information that I couldn't master in one reading.
This has really helped me understand that life it what you make it. You can't control everything, but you can control how you react to it. Never stop learning and growing.
I would suggest reading "The Four Agreements" first. Because if you understand what the author teaches in that book, what he writes in this book builds on, or adds to that.
A recurring quote in the books by Mr. Ruiz is "Practice makes the Master." He explains what it is that the reader should be practicing to make life more enjoyable.
The whole idea of self mastery or self improvement can sound complicated, but it's really not. That's not to say that it is easy.
The agreements, all of them, are common sense. And the Fifth Agreement closely follows the first four.
The author does an excellent job of explaining the mind and it's power.
This book won't be going anywhere soon. I plan to read it again and glean whatever little tidbits I may have missed from the first reading. I always learn something from this author and I recommend his books. They are both helpful and full of insight.
