When I first read the description I wasn't sure whether to expect serious sci fi or something more farcical and irreverent like the Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy. Turns out that the book has a fairly serious storyline with interesting concepts and sometimes hilarious, sometimes insightful social commentary. There are extremely funny parts, not over-the-top slapstick stuff, but just great situations and lines. At its heart though, I think The Fifth Beast is less about sci-fi gadgetry or comedy and more about how the different human and alien characters react when thrown together in the context of these very odd circumstances.

Great characters and a very enjoyable read from cover to cover, highly recommended.

If you are tired of the same stories being churned out by the same others then you have to give this one a try. Although you might not guess from its cover, where The Fifth Beast really shines is in its characters. In particular the emotional trip of Benjamin stands out as an honest, sometimes raw, portrayal of what I would say are many people's inward fears and doubts. Maybe we would all be better off if we examined how we might be the cause of many negative outcomes in our own lives.

Beyond the main character story lines the book does an incredible job of drawing believable and deep secondary (and tertiary) characters. When I read science fiction I want to believe in the world I am placed and the attention to detail in the writing of The Fifth Beast made that easy.

With its sense of humor and good pacing it is easy to take this novel at face value but you would be doing yourself a disservice. Like any good science fiction book it uses the genre to hold up a mirror to the state of the world today and how we live in it.

This is a good book that I ultimately enjoyed, but also one that took _way_ too long to get going.

The plot revolves around an offbeat alien encounter that reminded me a lot of Alan Dean Foster and Douglas Adams, though I wouldn't rank it in the same class as either author. There is a lot going on here (almost a bit too much at times), and it shifts back and forth between straightforward sci-fi, social commentary, philosophy, and humor. The main problem was that I had to slog through the first third or so—up to the point at which we finally see what's going on—before it really grabbed me. From that point forward, it was a page turner. But getting there was some work.

Essentially, there are two alien races who have arrived on Earth to settle a dispute that doesn't become clear until well into the book. Various other alien races get involved as we go along, and the author does a good job with the twists and turns. The story is not all that original—ADF has done some books like this—but I found it entertaining nonetheless.

If you enjoy this sort of sci-fi, you should enjoy this book, but be prepared for a long setup before things start moving.

I really enjoyed this novel. The story was interesting, there was just the right amount of description to give reader enough informations without overwhelming him and I could read it anywhere at any time. I like the characters of the book, probably because I can identify with many of them in some way and I did not expect the twist that came in the final part of the story. Enjoyment of something will always be a subjective matter but for me this novel simply nailed it. If you like lighter SCI-FI that is focused more on characters than on universe and technology you will probably enjoy it as well.

Yes, this was a weird one. It throws you straight into a story about aliens on Earth without much explanation, which was a little disorienting at first. But once the main characters are introduced the story really picks up steam. Some of it is funny and some of it is disturbing, but the human characters are all believable. Is there going to be a sequel?

I was skeptical after the first few pages, but I'm really glad I kept reading. Couldn't put it down. Interesting characters and unexpected turns. Lots of avenues available for a sequel - one I'd definitely read.
