At a time that I found myself questioning things because messages and my intuition seemed to contradict I stumbled on a recommendation for this book. This brought me peace, and bridged the gap to allowed me to continue to believe.
Dave explains the culture and language that was used in Christ's time to help us understand the intended meaning of the stories.
It let me see how Christ's teachings were in alignment with other non religious things I felt had an element of spirituality (like The Whole Brain Child, mindfulness, Continuous Discipline, the P.L.A.Y. Project). In all of these things you are in the moment, connected, and accepting. This way of enjoying our journey, is the way the a Lord tried to show us.
I have bought a couple copies of this to share with ones I love, because I wish everyone could have the peace that is has brought as I try to live the fifth way.
I read this book at a time when my spiritual life was in a stage of burn-out and I was experiencing nothing short of a faith crisis. The biblical truths that I held dear were not proving themselves sufficient and I was facing a true dark night of the soul. As Dave suggested, I found that there was a lot of unlearning that needed to happen in order for my heart to accept the truth that Jesus intended.
As the book unfolded, scripture was becoming alive to me in a fresh and interactive way. The parables in particular took on a richness of understanding that I had not before grasped. The way that Dave presented the Aramaic/Hebrew context of culture and language allowed for a visual of who Jesus was and what Jesus really meant when He spoke on this earth 2000 years ago.
The Fifth Way provided a sojourn with Jesus that allowed me to see Him in a new light. There were multiple “aha” moments throughout but my biggest take-away was that I was beginning to see a “smiling” Jesus that I had never seen before. One who I could experience in Kingdom…right here and right now. This in contrast to the rule-oriented task-master that I had sub-consciously allowed myself to believe was Jesus.
The Fifth Way is broken up into short chapters focusing on digestible concepts and accompanied by personal, transparent journal entries by the author.
Dave has an interesting way of presenting ideas. He at no time attempts to convince you of his understanding of Jesus but instead challenges you to become convinced of what you’re convinced of.
This book is not an “easy” read. It makes you ponder and reevaluate old ways of thinking. It’s not for the fast-food junkies out there that want simplistic, programmatic, how-to steps to the heart of Jesus. It is a journey…and one worth taking.
It is a fantastic journey to a better way to view life. When you read this book you will become "present" in your life and in your interactions with everyone you come in contact with.
I pick it up when ever I feel depression creeping in and also when I get nervous or feel a panic attack coming on. This is how I Imagine that Christ really is. This book will never sit in my bookcase as I keep it near me because just going over a few pages can change my outlook on all things for that day. If you want to know how to live a life of true GRATITUDE then get a copy now. It can change your life, It has changed mine. I have tried many times to get sober and improve my outlook on life and nothing has been as helpful as what I have learned from these pages. Know the Prince of Peace better than ever. Thanks be to God and Thank you Dave Brisbin for giving us The Fifth Way.
