It's an unfortunate reality that women are susceptible to random acts of aggression, from sexual harassment and stalking to physical assaults, domestic violence, date rape and worse. But women can learn how to protect and defend themselves -- with this groundbreaking guidebook. Let martial arts black belt and accomplished journalist Lori Hartman Gervasi walk you through easy-to-follow, everyday steps for taking charge of your personal safety, training your reflexes, and -- if and when the time comes -- using force. Her program consists of 26 potentially life-saving decisions that every woman must make, including:
DECIDE TO BELIEVE IN YOUR FIGHT - Battles are waged from the inside out. Your conscience, intelligence, and guts must be committed to the cause. You and those you love are the things worth fighting for.
DECIDE TO DEVISE A STRATEGY - Create a one-way ticket out of every imaginable circumstance, from back-door escape routes to getaways in public places. Think "what-if...?", plan for the unexpected, and be ready for anything!
DECIDE TO RECOGNIZE THE THREAT OF THE INITIAL ATTACK - When practicing awareness, you can detect danger before it happens. The bad guy will take steps to get close to you. Watch carefully and identify these for what they are―the preludes to an attack.
DECIDE TO MOVE - If an attacker strikes, don't freeze―get moving! Break through your fear with instant mobility. You have limitless options and any movement works as long as it leads to your safety.
DECIDE TO ACT ON YOUR INSTINCTS - Your intuition is your guide, but you must respond physically in order to be successful. When something isn't right, take action, change plans, redirect yourself, and control your destiny!
...along with Defense Do's And Don'ts, inspiring "Power Points," and other survival tactics that can help you to be prepared, stay strong, and

- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2015I love this book because it does what so few other self-defense books do: gives tips to AVOID BEING TARGETED FOR CRIME TO BEGIN WITH!! It is not dry and boring, but is full of anecdotes of real situations and reads almost like a novel. Gervasi's voice comes across as both that of a strong woman and a friend. I appreciate her choice not to include the stereotypical pictures of people in frozen positions supposedly demonstrating fighting skills that no beginner can really benefit from. Instead, she gives down to earth advice that encourages you to think about defending yourself in a realistic manner. She gives you permission to 'go nuts' to protect yourself and those you love if necessary. Personally, having always been taught to behave 'like a lady', just being told it's okay to be 'impolite' to the bad guy is a gift in itself. I wish I had read this book years ago! Immediately after finishing it, I bought copies for my mom and best friend. I have put into practice the tips given in the book, and while the world is still a crazy place, I feel more alert and empowered as I make my way through life. Who doesn't want that? If you are a woman, do yourself a favor and read this book! I promise you will not regret it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2011This book will give you truely invaluable information about how to protect oneself as a woman. The good author is a karate black belt, so she will also point out about how to fight, which anatomical weapons to use, where to target, and so on. But probably among the most important insights she provided are psychological ones. If you have read the famous books "The Gift of Fear" and "Warrior Mindset", you will understand how the mind is the most important weapon in fighting and in defending yourself. This kind of book that addresses psychological issues is rare but necessary. You'll find tons of books on fighting subjects. But they can only prepare you in body not really in mind. Real fighting is gruesome and it has much more elements than that. Moreover, fighting doesn't start when one is only in physically close quater combat, or the term "force level four" the author of this book used. Fighting, however, does start several steps beforehand. The author put the very good job of showing women how to be aware of it, how to avoid the danger, how to fend for yourself, and how to prepare yourself effectively. The book is very wel written. Also the author did write with humour. Don't surprise to find yourself smile or laugh while reading the book. Thumps up for the good work!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2013Received this book and have to say after reading a few pages I'm curious to get to the rest of the book. I'm researching multiple sources with the goal of structuring a self defense program for women. One thing of primal importance is for women to feel empowered and develop the confidence and self esteem needed to know they can defend themselves. It is a fact that a woman doesn't have the same strength as a man, but the pounds of pressure a woman can generate in a strike can cause damage when hitting soft tissues like the neck, nose, groin, knees, ear, eyes etc. This book can complement some ones knowledge to support whatever your self defense objective is.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2022I’ve trained martial arts for years now. I teach women’s self defense with a focus on empowerment I’m always on the lookout for books or research to expand my knowledge base. This was great. It really focuses on the realistic issues women face in the realm of self defense. I’ve been recommending it to my students and fellow instructors ever since I got half way through it. My copy is now highlighted and tabbed with sticky notes.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2014My family and I have been participating in the martial arts since 1999. Currently, we teach Fridays and Saturdays at the local rec center or gymnasium. My employer asked me to put together a women's self defense course for mid summer. My intent was to keep it short (less than 90 minutes), teach the participants what natural weapons are available, what targets are available and give them a chance to hit something.
This book is helping me (a guy) assemble my program. My intent is to address the stand up fight and based upon how well the program is received, put together another on the ground fight. Another book that is of help is entitled "The Gift of Fear". I recommend that one also.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2013I expected a book about firearms but its more a book on defense. A good read though. I liked it
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2013This book is not just for women. However, if you are a women or you want the women in your life to be protected, you and they should read this book. Written by a black-belt female martial arts person, the book covers mental and physical decisions to be made well in advance of a crisis, and how to get your guard up. She also offers very specific tactics to avert danger as well as to protect yourself when things have gone to the brink of life-threatening conditions. The book is not trying to teach you martial arts techniques, but rather day to day things that you can do for preparation, awareness, pre-planning and response.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2011The information here is presented very well. Lot's of ideas on how to make your home safer, become more aware of your surroundings, and to know your plan of attack in an emergency or a threatening situation. I've made some strategically placed "decorative" changes to my home as a result and really feel like I'd have a chance if someone were to break in. I also now carry Brutus the Bull Dog Self Defense Keychain - BLACK. Feel a lot safer just walking around from learning to be more aware. I also have better knowledge on how/where to strike if something was to ever happen. Purchasing this book for all my female friends and relatives.
