On the other hand, this little set is worth getting alone for "War of Words Remixed and Remastered". It blows the original version of the album off the planet! The songs sound better than they ever could have! Some notable examples: Into the Pit is righteous! On the older version, Halford's voice was rather inaudible and muffled, but on here he sings loud, proud and clear like the metal god he is; the instruments have also been more fine-tuned and overall a bit louder. A fade-out has been added to the end of the song as well, eliminating the too-jarring and over-fast lead-in to Nailed to the Gun on the OG version. Speaking of "Nailed", this track gives Halford grander, clearer vocals, though not quick as needed as Into the Pit, as well as a very slightly slower tempo, allowing for a wee-bit longer song.
Overall, I'm kinda disappointed by the documentary, but on the other hand the bonus CD was more than worth it. Kind of mixed bag of metal.
Obviously, I'm a little bit slanted in reviewing this, because Halford is one of my fave artists in the metal scene, his voice and songs always have been an inspiration, but this definitive collection of the early FIGHT era, featuring spectacular live footage of this incredible band, is unbeatable. The entire WAR OF WORDS album is played out right before our eyes when it happened, using footage from all over the globe to compose one "greatest hits" visual experience. The audio and sound editing of these gigs is perfect.
The "making of" segments are short and fun, I wished for more here, love the behind the scenes stuff, but we take what we can get. Highly enjoyable.
The remastered WAR OF WORDS album included with the DVD is a real treat! Love the original release but this was just a mind-blowing surprise, the songs have never sounded better or more relevant. Part of the appeal is just the really good lyrics that accompany these tunes, compared to most of the so-so stuff that comes down the pike in the metal genre. That's why I'm such a discriminating fan when it comes to my metal, and I must say Halford always delivers, the FIGHT- War of Words album and the HALFORD-Crucible albums are about the best you can get.
So if you're a fan of Rob Halford or heavy metal from the '90's and into the 21st Century (old school metal fused with current updates) you will really dig this package.
It's good to see Rob back in Judas Priest, but I'm one of those fans who also believes that Halford really delivered some of his best---and most personal---work in the Fight/Two/Halford days, so I really look back on those fondly and appreciate MGE keeping those days alive with these excellent releases.
Brauvo! More please!
