BRUNO

I always said I was straight and it was the truth until him.

Damkn. Manager for a rock group. Bruno. On of the bodyguards. After an attempted assault, Bruno finally admitted to himself that he's attracted to Damon.

Three and a half slow burn stars rounded up to four

“Hurt people hurt people.” Hands down, my favorite quote of the book.

We start with Damon getting some pretty bad news and just when he’s starting to rebound, the unthinkable nearly happens. It was hard to see Damon so beaten down, and he mostly was his own worst enemy. He and Bruno had known each other for years, even being friends for a while prior to the timeframe of the book. Bruno is demi-sexual, but doesn’t really know it. He helps Damon through his emotional healing and is such a sweetheart. Once Bruno is all in, he stays all in. Damon is mostly all over the place in this book, which is expected given the set of issues he’s faced with, and Bruno never falters in his steadfast support for Damon.

Given what Damon goes through in the beginning of this book, it’s not a surprise that this is a fairly slow burn book. Slow burn as in we are at the 60-ish% mark before anything physical happens between the two. Again, totally understandable. Once the two do get physical, the scenes are definitely sexy, if a little repetitive. Here again, Bruno shows remarkable kindness, understanding and support of Damon.

Reading Damon’s inner demon thoughts was hard. He really beats himself up for being gay, as that’s what he’s been taught. Reading those words are difficult, so if you are sensitive to that, take heed. I appreciated the way the author handled that entire subject and showed a person seeking help and therapy to overcome these issue in a positive and healthy way. The author allows that mental health issues need not have a stigma attached in a way that is subtle and real. Overall, I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the next in the series.

TW for sexual assault and strong thoughts of self-deprecation in regards to ones sexuality. Read the author’s TW before reading.

An emotional M/M romance with trigger warning

Fighting Attraction is the first book in the Sentinel Protection series, starring Damon and Bruno, who frequently appeared in the Love in Sienna series as amazing supporting characters. In this book, we really get to peel back the layers on them as people as they embark on a journey of self-discovery of their own. As usual, Laura John does not shy away from traumatic situations, adversity, or controversial topics. The book touches on the horrors of sexual assault, the trauma of “conversion therapy,” and the complexities of coming out in a religious family. I mention this, so readers are aware to be ready for it in case it may be a trigger in some way, although Laura handles each topic beautifully, and writes her characters with such authentic emotion, you can’t help but feel like you’re on the emotional wave with them. I haven’t read many M/M books, and while it is a central theme, and seems to be for the whole series maybe, for me it was about two people accepting themselves and finding the right person for them. And honestly, if you want raw, relatable, authentic emotion mixed with great characters that can make you laugh out loud with their banter and antics, and yes sizzling chemistry, no one does it better. I look forward to the next book!

Let's talk about Bruno

Fighting Attraction is the first in the Sentinel Protection series. I enjoyed this book and loved both of the main characters. We've seen both Bruno and Damon previously in the Love in Sienna series and I was thrilled they got a story. This is not a slow burn. I truly think if you have not read her previous stories, you may misunderstand the pacing of this book.

It moves fast. But not truly. These characters have danced around one another frequently in previous books. Damon has unabashedly flirted with Bruno for years. Bruno is closed off, guarded and focused on his job. This whirlwind MM romance hits all the boxes: angst, drama, heat and sweet.

I loved that these characters both faced huge obstacles in this book, that they work out separately and together. Once again, Laura has created a wonderful group of supporting characters (many of whom show up in previous books), that bring the story home. Truthfully, I would have loved more of their story, simply because I adore both men.

So much more than you’re expecting

This read is SO much more than the…ahem, adult…times between Bruno and Damon. This is emotional, terrifying in its raw and painful honesty, enlightening, hopeful, and so wonderful all at once. Damon had such an internal struggle that I cried a few times because it was all so true to what some LGBTQ folks (youths and adults alike) either have gone through or are still going through. The self-loathing, the fear, the misery and certainty that they’re defective, and the hope when the right person is found who can help work through all of it. Luckily, Damon had the support and love of friends and the one guy who has pushed him away for so long, but that didn’t make his work to be one with himself any easier.

As for Bruno, I really liked his conflict and worry. And then his honesty and openness. He was amazing. He didn’t push, he didn’t demand, he didn’t expect miracles. He was just there with his heart beating for Damon and a shoulder to lean on. And that was beautiful.

I adored this book and can’t wait to see what comes next. Will Maverick finally get his man? We shall see.

I have wanted this book since early on in the Love in Sienna series and I am so glad it is finally here. Damon and Bruno are complete opposites, they are two people who you would never think would work but they do. This book gutted me in the first two chapters and slowly put my heart back together throughout the book. Damon deserves all the happiness and love in the world and I am glad Bruno was there to give it to him.
