Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Robert Leonhard served in the US Army for 24 years as an infantry officer, combat developer, and war planner. Currently he serves on the principal professional staff of The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland as a research analyst specializing in irregular warfare.

Colonel Leonhard earned a BA in History from Columbus University, a Masters in International Relations from Troy State University, a Masters of Military Arts and Sciences from the US Army Command and General Staff College, and a Doctorate in American History from West Virginia University.

He lives in West Virginia with his wife, the novelist Suzanne Elizabeth Leonhard, and their children. He is an avid wargamer and chess player.

Fighting by Minutes is one of several seminal works by Leonhard. I am so regretful this book was not required reading when I was an officer cadet. Leonhard’s Fighting by Minutes explains in brilliant detail that all tactics reduce to simple fundamentals. From my experience as an officer cadet being forced to rote learn tactical principles, Leonhard explains why those principles exist in the first place, and in some cases, invalidates commonly accepted truths in the field of tactics. If I could recommend any single book for a junior officer to read, it would be this one.

First, the book came in immaculate condition and in a timely manner from the vendor. Now, I have waited 5 years for the price of this book to come down to reasonable. It is a must read for a professional military officer like myself. The concepts are based on conventional war, but can be adapted into COIN. As the US Army focuses on a Hybrid war of high intensity and COIN in the future, I highly encourage all professionals to read this book.

The author expands upon the ideas he put forth in "The Art of Maneuver" and provides terrific insight to the power of turning the enemies time flank and by sequencing operations (think past the first punch of a campaign). This book is a must-read for any serious maneuver officer and for anyone that wants to dive into the mechanics of maneuver warfare. Terrific book.

This is a tough call. I really like Leonhard's work and this is a work that I agree every professional should read. But the price is just outrageous! I've paid less for first editions of rare volumes by J.F.C.Fuller! If you want to save the money get this one through interlibrary loan. You can read it in about one or two sittings...longer if you are taking notes....But DO NOT buy this book...I believe in making a buck as much as the next guy...but the price on this is unconsciounable.
