The reader is pulled into Riley's story on page one and their hearts are still tangled in knots, but in a good way, at the end of the epilogue. Riley has had to deal with a lot in her life: being abandoned by her mother, living with her stepdad, shutting out her stepbrother, and losing the love of her life, not once but twice. Her coping mechanism was an unhealthy addiction to men, which she finally realized was bad when she slept with her best friend's ex.
Turning her life around with the help of a good man and therapy, she thought she was happy until her past came back into her life. Then all hell breaks loose and so many things are not as they see.
The characters in this book are well-developed and the story moves at a nice pace. There are some surprises in store for the reader but they will only solidify the notion that the HEA is well-deserved and long past due. I can't wait to see where this author goes with her next book because the journey through this series has been and emotional roller coaster and I loved the ride.
I was drawn to Riley and her story from the time her mom left to what Dave put her through and the night that ended with Jon going to jail! How she tried to put back the pieces. I cried for them both!
Will Jon and Riley find their way back to each other or will the hate destroy them?
I've been a fan of Elizabeth Wells for years, her books are intense and gripping and romantic, and her talent for writing shines through on every page.
She doesn't just tell a story, she lives a life through the pages of her books and takes us right along with her.
I have followed the progress of this series of books and was not so patiently waiting for this third book to release. After getting the chance to finally get my hands on it, I was not at all surprised to find out that it was 100% worth the wait.
We got to see a small glimpse of Riley in the first two books, but it's easy to see that it didn't even begin to scratch the surface of who she really is.
We have a woman who was horribly mistreated for years, and as so often happens to people who have been abused like she was, she felt it was deserved, justified, and it shaped the way she viewed life and what she thought she was capable of.
This life that was forced upon her the things she was manipulated into doing and thinking about herself, shaped the person she became and caused her to
Then we have Jon, he loved her and she hurt him.
I loved Jon, but at the same time I kind of wanted to be mad at him for not understanding what she had gone through, and for blaming everything that followed between the two of them completely on her, but as so often happens in life, he wasn't getting the full story. He didn't see the abuse and she was so far under the influence of her abuser, that she couldn't tell him what was wrong, because she didn't even really know herself. That's what kept me from truly being mad at him, because in a way, he was a victim as well.
And then he is finally ready to learn the truth about what went wrong between them and any lingering anger I felt towards him vanished completely in the fave of his understanding and acceptance of who she is and what she's been through.
This book has flawed characters that go through a lot of growth and come out the other side better people.
Elizabeth Wells has a way of writing that makes one feel as if you really know the characters. I almost feel like I've read about old friends of mine, and I'm happy for them. In the end, I think they got exactly what they needed. From each other and from themselves.
Wills is an engaging writer, and her characters are well-developed and relatable. And the heart! OMG, this book is full of emotion and love, and some angst and yearning, too, of course. But all of the feelings ring true. We've felt these things, too, so we know the emotions that the characters are experiencing.
The characters also endure things that many of us never do, and that simply makes their rewards and happiness that much better. Riley in particular overcomes many things to be the woman she is in the end. That's what it's all about, right?
Ms. Wills' writing is very absorbing. She has the ability to put the reader into the moment, as opposed to being just an observer. When someone can pull you in that well, you tend to come out the other end just slightly changed in some way, even if it's a small way. That is a talent that Will has developed and you'll love it.
I recommend Fighting My Affections, absolutely. Good writing, good story, excellent execution! Enjoy.
We meet Riley briefly in books one and two but you never get a good pulse on her. Well in Fighting My Affections you realize there is so much more to Riley and what we finally find out is horribly devastating. She is so messed up she makes wrong choices and loses the love of her life in the process. Would Jon ever understand her and why she destroyed his heart?
Jon, he was a tough one for me. I wasn't sure whether to smack him or hug him. I get his anger and I am glad he understood but come on.
I have never "shipped" a couple so hard in my life. Me. Wells writing is beautiful and engaging.
I say the angst factor was right on and there was enough twists to keep me guessing. Not my first Elizabeth Wells book and definitely not my last!!
