Fighting Redemption was good, but not as great as I expected. Don't get me wrong, it was a decent read. It's just that based on the five star ratings and reviews, I was expecting something amazing, heartfelt, and emotional. I didn't get all of that out of the book, which is why I have to resign myself to just giving it three stars.
Since all of the other reviews basically covered the positives of the book (you can read those for yourself), I just want to explain some of the issues I had with it:
I didn't feel like the emotional connection between Ryan and Fin was as strong as it could have been. We're brought into the book with the Ryan and Fin already separated for six years, with Ryan the stationed in Afghanistan and Fin in Australia/traveling to Antarctica for her job. The two were childhood "friends" (if you can call it that--more on this later) but had feelings for each other that they would never admit. So when Ryan comes back to Australia and the two meet again, the foundation for their initial relationship is supposed to be their childhood relationship from years ago. But here lies the problem: they barely interacted as kids/teens. A few short scenes from the past were shown where they were alone and conversing (maybe two or three scenes?) but with the other past scenes, Fin's brother and Ryan's best friend, Jake, or other family members were present with them. This prevented any chemistry between the two from developing and so when the two meet again after a six year absence, we are supposed to feel that the two have loved each other since they were young, that Fin/Ryan never let go after all this time, that they can't stop thinking about each other, etc. etc. Based on the limited scenes from the past I just couldn't see it.Read more ›
What a beautiful and heart-wrenching story of a broken soldier's love for a girl who owned his heart.
Ryan grew up with an enormous guilt from a tragedy that struck his family when he was just a young boy. He dealt with a drunken father, and a mother who didn't protect him or herself. He had a life long dream of becoming a solider and getting away from the torment he knew.
Jake and Finlay Tanner walked into his life right when he needed them. Jake became a brother and Fin became his heart. As much as he loved and wanted Fin he wouldn't allow himself to have her because of his life long dream of becoming a solider. So he kept his love and wanting to himself. At 19, he joined the Army.
"For six years I fought every day not to think of you, and I lost, because every day you were all I could see."
This was a very emotional read and I can't tell you how many times I cried. But it was worth every tear.
This story was so beautifully written. In the beginning we are given a glimpse of the future, which already had me in tears. The questions and assumptions were racing through my mind. Then we get the story from the beginning, showing us how the relationships grew over the years highlighting all the important times in their life. You can't help but fall in love with the characters and feel the power of love they have for each other.
I'll love you longer than the stars that live in the sky."
This was a very powerful and emotional read. I highly recommend!!
♥I'm so incredibly thankful for the men and women who serve and protect our country. My heart goes out to the families they leave behind, not knowing if they'll ever see their loved ones again. You are all truly heroes! ♥
Standalone with a HEA ♥
I adored this book on ever level, it made me smile, curse, laugh, cry and swoon - what more could ask for? Read this fabulous book, I promise you will never forget it.
There are not enough Stars in the Universe to give this book! It is a book that I know I will be picking up to read for years to come
Ryan Kendall grew in a broken family and knows all too well what it is like to suffer from loss. He spent most of his late childhood and early teens at his best friend Jakes house trying to fight and hide his feelings for Jake’s sister Finlay. Ryan needs to escape from Finlay feeling if they were ever to be together he would just hurt her and ruin her heart. Not realizing that by leaving to join the S.A.S. he has already done that to her.
Ryan and Finlays story is an emotional, heart wrenching, ugly crying story. I found myself whaling like someone who has just lost the love of their life about 80% of this book. I could not HELP but to feel the emotions from these as they fought their love for one another.
As Ryan is off fighting a war and trying to ignore his feelings for Finlay, Jake is making sure that he knows what she is up to in life, because Jake knows deep down in his heart, that his best friend and sister are soul mates and he is okay with them loving one another.
“Six years, Ryan, do you know how hurt I was, each day passing by and not even a note or an email? I didn’t just lose you, I lost my brother too, both of you left me, but I was ok with that, I understood that this was what you needed to do, so I moved on.” <3 Finlay
When Ryan joins Jake for their leave, he decides to stay with the siblings so that he can be close to Finlay. The whole time Ryan is around, the both of them are fighting every fiber of their bodies to not give into the temptations of one another. I have never felt crazier chemistry flying off of the pages of a book as I did when reading this one.Read more ›
