Julia is 16 when she meets 18 year old Jaxson. She is living with her grandmother after her mother dies and he is the hot guy on a motorcycle with a drunk for a dad. He rescues her from two guys and they become best friends. He doesn't feel he will ever be good enough for her even though she is in love with him. When he is 20 he enlists in the Navy, she visits him on his graduation from SEAL training 6 months later and she asks him to be her first. After that night she doesn't see him again for 5 years. They talk but he doesn't seek her out but secretively sees her at her graduation. She hears he has been injured and taken to a hospital in Germany however when she arrives he will not see her, she says if he sends her away they are no longer friends.
A year later after he has been through rehabilitation and gets out of the Navy he goes back home to see her. She wants nothing to do with him however he being the overbearing guy he is continues to pursue her. He can come off as a big a$$hole and it does get on your nerves at times during the book. She had been dating Wyatt who is a jerk and they come to blows. He tries to keep things platonic to make it all up to her but that soon changes as he can't keep his hands off her after he moves in with her to protect her. She ends up pregnant and Jaxson doesn't feel he could be a good father due to his upbringing and is upset. There is some back story to what all he went through as a Seal and being captured also. Wyatt kidnaps her, he is insane and she ends up in the hospital. When they get home from the hospital Jaxson proposes and they marry a month later. Nice epilogue where she goes into labor and has Annabelle.
He tells her he's leaving for the Navy so she decides to tell him how she feels and he shuts her down leaving her really devastated. A year goes by and she's been at home pining away for him while he's screwing anything with boobs. After seeing each other again she gets a glimmer of hope but again is shut down. How long can this girl take this? More years go by, same thing the next time. She finally gets a boyfriends in college - a med student - so Jax tells himself he's happy that she's getting someone she deserves but still loves her. It's a big ole they do/they don't mess - even once he returns home for good.
It's kinda scary how possessive he is of her and flies off the handle sometimes violently whenever anyone touches her or even speaks to her in a way be doesn't like. Yet she still wants him and he's still holding back. Etc. Etc. She shouldn't put up with that since he's the one that pushes her away. I only wished she would've had more of her own love life so she wouldn't be such a loser dreaming of roses and fairy tales the whole times he's away. Then maybe he would've pulled his head out of his ass sooner and tell her how he feels.
There are several writing issues I have here. This is her debut novel & she has written several more books since then so I hope she has gotten a thesaurus. There are way too many 'whimper's and 'growl's in there. Almost every page there is one or both and sometimes several times!
Sometimes it was hard to tell who was talking if there were several people in the scene. I had to do a lot of backing up to figure out who was saying what. Even then it was hard to tell at times.
The ending action sequence seemed way too familiar. I knew I hadn't read this book before but know that same scene is either in another book or in a movie. It wasn't original. Still gripping but at the same time I'm racking my brain to remember where I saw it last.
She has more books in this series that are spin-offs of friends in this book. I would possibly read them, I liked the characters introduced in this book.
Overall I think 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
This is a GREAT series starter of the Men of Honor. I have read it at least three times and will probably have it as my go to series when I get in a book lull. I love that the pain and anguish of the characters are felt when I read them as well as their triumphs and victories. KC puts a lot of feeling in her writing and it shows in her books. Thank you KC for sharing your talents.
