By: Gillian Jones
Let me start by saying the books I have read by Gillian she writes about very hard subjects. I am sure you can see where Fighting Weight is going.
Alina has had too many people in her life telling her that she wasn't good enough. That she needs to do this or that so that she doesn't get too fat. At 13 her Bully makes her first appearance. For years she falls into the trap her Bully has set and develops Bulimia and Body Dysmorphia. After all the hell she starts to fight back. Through therapy and with the help of her brother and band she fights hard.
Slater connects with Alina as soon as he sees her on stage. When his band invites hers to tour with them for 8 weeks he wants to get to know Alina better.
Through the tour Slater sees the good and bad. How does he respond?
My take on this book:
This is a very emotional book. Even if you have never dealt with eating disorders or issues with body image issues you will feel the emotion that Alina and Slater go through. From sadness to despair to elation. And in the process of reading I learned to see a little more inside someone rather than outside. Everyone deals with something. But a smile can always make a difference to one person. Do Not miss this book.
Till the next book ~ Nancy
Alina was such a complex character who had such inner demons that you wanted to stand up and fight them with her. She had such strength and determination regardless how many times they knocked her down. There was also a vulnerability to her that you couldn't help but find yourself her champion.
The relationships between her and her brother was so beautiful. They had this connection and loyalty that you felt right off the page. And don't even get me started on the girlfriends who were also her band mates. The loyalty and support they offered not just her, but each other was such a joy to read.
Slater, was a wonderful surprise that Alina didn't even see coming. I loved the way their friendship developed and blossomed into this beautiful partnership.
Gillian did such and amazing job telling a story that exists more often than we would like to believe. While not everyone has the same type of bully within them, I think somewhere deep down we all have experienced a bully within ourselves. I don't want to give away any spoilers. I think you need to read this wonderful story for yourself. Hopefully during the course of the book you will find your own inner strength within her words and Alina's journey.
This author gave so many women who fight a similar battle each day a voice. I was there with Alina as she looked in the mirror, wrapped her hands around her wrists, and each time she wished this demon to go away.
Then we get Slater. Every woman in the world deserves a Slater. He was the perfect puzzle piece to this story. What I love about all the characters in this book is that each one is written as if they were the main characters. They were given just as much care in creation. I was caught in these words, this world created until the very last line was read.
Though the subject matter of this book might be difficult for some to read, I am glad I did. This book was well thought out and I am grateful the author found the courage to bring it to life.

This is Alina's story.
Her past has shaped her present and her future. Having only her brother Lucky to stand by her she sometimes feels her only friend is her inner voice. Her. The one who reminds her she'll never be good enough. The one that pushes and pushes for her to lose control. The bully.
On the road to recovery Ali finds refuge in her music and her band. A chance relationship leads them to get an audition to play with Sicken Union on tour. It's a huge break for them but Ali can't help but worry. Can she cope being away from home for so long without her support system and her brother? Is she really good enough? Can she stand on stage in front of everyone?
Slater is riding high. Lead singer of Sicken Union. He doesn't need a relationship. He takes girls as and when he wants. He loves his life as it is. The band, the music and fans.
Searching for support acts for his tour he sits in on final auditions when he spots her. Hiding in the shadows of the band Happenstance is Alina. She may be trying to hide but he sees her. He see's the light and plots a plan to bring it out. He can't stop thinking of her. When they meet he see's how skittish she is. He doesn't need any complications in his life but something about her makes him change his mind. He's determined to get her to trust him.
Can Alina trust him? Can she find it within herself to trust anyone but her brother. Not even her bandmates know her secrets. Can she open up and fight her bully head on?
The research in this book must have been endless. The detail and facts really open your mind to this illness.
The fight Alina has on a daily basis is truly heartbreaking. The fact that her bully isn't a person but a voice in her head is so hard to wrap your head around. Her struggles and heartbreak become yours. You hurt so badly for her you want to jump in the pages and give her a great big hug. Her strength as the book goes on will make you do damn proud of her. She's so scared of most things but she holds her head up and tries her best. Sometimes she falls and in those moments you're in her position, you are her. We all have hangups so you can see from Alina's thoughts that it would be easy to let that voice win. She picks herself up and carries on and i just love her!!
Slater is not at all what you think he will be. He really surprised me. You think he's going to be the usual rock god ego guy with women falling at his feet. To a degree he is but he's so much more and i fell in love with him. At first he's at a loss as to how to handle Alina. Despite his reservations he see's her. He see's the girl she is and he see's the girl she can be and he wants it. He's so patient and understanding of something he knows nothing about. His strength and patience with Alina is wonderful to read not only for Alina but him too.
The supporting characters are all amazing and i think i need to write to the author and beg her for their stories too. All of Happenstance, all of Sicken Union and of course her brother Lucky.
Superbly written I loved the feel of family among friends. They might not be blood related but they were family. The story flowed well and built along the way. I had no idea where the plot was taking me and i loved every minute.
Gritty, heartbreaking, crushing and angsty describe this book but also heartwarming, beautiful, loving and sweet do too. It's a story of courage and a lifetime fight against an invisible bully.
Amazing! Highly recommend.
Alina and Slater will take you on a journey you'll never forget.
This story is not only raw and real but it has the witty humour I love with Gillians books.
A slow burning Love story that may not be traditional but it's beautiful none the less. I absolutely loved it.
I just adored Ali I thought she was incredibly brave and a lot stronger than she gave herself credit for.
This girl went through a horrific ordeal as a child. Not to mention the constant barrage of put downs no child should be subjected to.
These factors set in motion the downward spiral of one young girls life that almost destroyed her.
The moment her Bully sunk its claws into her and took over, it broke my fuxxing heart.
The only good thing in Ali's early life was her Brother Lucky. I absolutely loved him, he too had his own Demons to tackle but he's always been Ali's rock.
Her love of music and playing in a band also helped her a lot. Giving her an outlet for her pain, writing songs.
When her Band gets the chance to audition to tour with Slater Jenkins...Rock God. Ali is nervous she tries to blend into the background not be seen, However Slater has noticed her and is determined to find out why this beautiful girl is hiding in the shadows.
Slater OMFG!!! He's fantastic you can't help but love him.
As with Tainted by Love this story tackles another difficult subject that not many like to talk openly about.
When you read a book like this one it's emotionally draining, that's the point. The struggles these characters go through are very real even if the story surrounding them takes the edge off the reality.
It helps raise awareness without being in your face about it.
Gillian is a remarkable woman and I love her for being brave enough to tackle this style of writing.
I'm sure a lot of us can relate in one way or another to the struggles Ali goes through, having our own form of Bully/Tormenter that sits on our shoulder taunting our insecurities, whatever they may be. I know I certainly have.
Thank you Gillian and Donna for being brave enough to face this journey together. You're both amazing. xx
Now give me a book about Lucky. I need more of him in my life.
Slater is an interesting guy who was exactly who Alina needed. If he wasn't the type of guy who knew how to walk the line and when to push, he wouldn't of been able to get her. I don't want to put any spoilers in, just know He is amazing! This rock star romance is truly one of a kind.
Gillian did such an amazing job on a sensitive topic. And I truly believe everyone should read this story. This book has impacted me deeply, and my heart is lighter for it. I know this book will be a re-read many times throughout my life and definitely when my heart is hurting. I loved this book so much!!
For me Gillian Jones is an automatic read. I've read all her books and can honestly say I loved them all. Yes there are some that are my favorites and Fighting Weight is now on that list. My top read last year was Tainted by Love. I really didn't think any book could come close to TBL and I never thought I could share my love for another couple like I have for Trinity and Hendrix but let me tell you Alina Cassidy and Slater Jenkins are right up there with them.
Once again in true Gillian Jones fashion she has taken a subject that needs to be heard and gives it a voice. She does this with such compassion and heart. Bulimia is a very prevalent disease in our society and Ms. Jones has weaved a story that will hurt your heart and then will help to heal it.
Alina has fought with her "bully" since she was thirteen, never thinking that it would lead to a life of hiding. Hiding her true self, hiding the voice inside, hiding the self harm. No one knows the real Alina, no one, until Slater.
"It's as if he can see right through me, and I instantly wonder if maybe I've been slacking in my ability to keep my secrets mine."
Slater is quite simply a Rock God. He has never felt the need to settle down with one woman and the whole white picket fence deal. Then he sees her, "The girl with the dark hair, blue eyes, and flawless skin, who takes my breath away like a sucker punch to the gut." and everything changes. He needs to know her, see her, own her.
"I've never wanted a girl to call mine. Yet, that's what she is: mine."
Besides her brother Lucky, Alina doesn't let anyone get too close. She hasn't even opened up to her bandmates so it's very hard for her when Slater worms his way closer to her and is determined to discover all there is to know about the sexy guitarist.
"I'll make it through whatever's thrown my way while on this tour and fight for the light, even when negativity pushes me towards that familiar darkness. I vow to enjoy this journey with my head held high."
This book easily made it into my top read for this year so far because it is so very deserving to be there!!
Alina has he demon to fight (bulimia).
Although Alina has her ups and downs with her demons. She discovers Love!!!
The love of Slater and the live of friendship.
This book may not be for everyone but is is a great book for me.
Gillian it is obvious how much this subject means to you and I love a great live story.
Keep writing these amazing books and I'll keep reading.
