I'm not one to read non-romance all that often, nowadays. But this was just... wow!
With multiple POVs, this story will take one a wild ride. Twists and turns you don't see coming, making you bite your nails and sit on the edge of your seat because what. Is. Happening?!
This book was so addicting, I didn't want to put it down. I couldn't. Even at work, I sneaked in some reading because these characters were on my mind.
I love how I questioned everything about this story, I was suspicious of everything and everyone, couldn't trust anything. I had my hunches and some were spot on. It all comes together toward the end, the last piece of the puzzle is added and voila!
Biggest a-ha! moment of my life, I'm telling you.
Needless to say, I loved it and this was my first CR book, but not my last. 5 stars.
While I've loved and devoured other books by Calia Read, and somewhat knew what to expect by her dark and twisty writing style, this one left me reeling.
The execution and writing style were brilliant (outside of the handfuls of grammatical errors sprinkled throughout). The seamless yet purposefully deceptive writing drags you in and pulls you under, until you're drowning with the characters. I found myself lost in Selah's mind, fighting to swim to the surface right along with her.
I loved every minute of this mind-bending read...until the very last sentence of the epilogue. "Some people are just not meant for this world."
I do not need an HEA to love a book, nor does having a character die ruin a book for me. Life isn't all sunshine and roses. Life is hard—it sucks at times. For many, day-to-day life is torture. But to justify suicide without some sort of PSA on suicide awareness is just plain irresponsible of the author.
Not to mention this horrifying statement: "Because what people don’t understand is that drugs are just a band-aid placed over agony. They may hide it and a lot of times, numb it. But at the end of the day the agony’s still there. Still waiting for you." While I understand that might be coming from Selah's mind, it's ethically wrong, in my opinion.
There may be some vulnerable people who are extremely sensitive and reactive to what they read. If someone with major depression read this, or other mental illnesses reading this book, I'd hate to for them to think that this ending is the only way out.
This was a MAJOR missed opportunity for this author to reach people in need of help. Again, as stated, there was NOT a PSA on suicide awareness following this book.
***So I'll take the opportunity to add this here***:
Suicidal thoughts and behavior are common among people with mental illness. If you or a loved one have thoughts of hurting yourself, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately, go to an emergency room, or confide in a trusted relative or friend. Or call a suicide hotline number — in the United States, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255).
This is one of those books you have to experience for yourself. Although I was lost most of the time, when Calia Read finally brings you to the 'a-ha' moment towards the end, it all magically makes sense! There is a huge sense of relief that you as the reader aren't slowing losing your mind, which seemed to be what might be happening to Selah. All the supporting characters clearly have their place in this story and it's like following a trail of crumbs that they lay out haphazardly in order to both bring you to a somewhat satisfying conclusion and drive you crazy along the way.
It's a story that kept me both riveted and consumed with trying to figure out right along with Selah what exactly her life meant. It was almost like watching a car wreck in slow motion knowing there is nothing you can do to stop it.
I can't help but be vague in this review because there is no way to fully explain Figure Eight without giving too much away.
When you need to screw up your brain in the very best way, grab one of the author's books. You will be mesmerized by her words and filled with the most incredible wonder. I do believe she is a genius. Her way with words is just outstanding.
A huge 5 stars!
