The FiiO L3 is designed with a 3.5mm stereo jack to Apple's dock connector, enabling output of high quality line-level audio from iPod, iPhone, and iPad that can be sent to portable audio equipment such as headphone amplifiers and power amplifiers. Designed with high-quality materials, the L3 isolates the audio signal from interference to deliver cleaner and more accurate sound from your iPod/iPhone/iPad. The L3 employs the new HPC-22W cable with ultra-fine PCOCC-A conductors for its exceptional signal transmission property and usability. Twenty strands of 80μm PCOCC-A wire are unified into a bundle and three bundles are grouped as a conductor that is geometrically stable. This construction method ensures uniformity of wire structure, eliminates internal gaps, and prevents deformation of wire strands. Each conductor in the HPC-22W is jacketed with 0.18mm PFA (Teflon), a material selected for its outstanding electrical and transmission characteristics. The shield/ground consists of 53 strands of 0.12μm PCOCC-A wire, with cotton rope filling the internal space and providing additional tensil strenth. The outer jacket is made of TPE olefinic elastomer. Feature Highlights - Shielded construction provides maximum isolation from interference - Pure copper conductors for better audio clarity and a more natural-sounding midrange - High quality durable connectors for precise contact and signal integrity - Supports standard dock profile on iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Does not support Shuffle. For portable use: This would have been a fantastic upgrade in sound quality if the cord was the right size! Make sure you are getting the small cord version that fits nicely with your portable amp/dac and mp3 combo.
For home use (with long cable): What are you doing buying a L3? There are much better high quality cable choices. The short cable l3 is a great value but if you dont plan to use it for portable use than i dont believe this is a wise choice.
Sound quality itself: This L3 cord bypasser upgrade was a great deal more pleasurable to listen to music straight from my mp3 player and amp/dac combo than the headphone input! The highs and mids were cleaner and more sparkly, and the bass felt more intact and balanced with more punch and less muddiness.
At first i couldnt tell much of a difference between this and the headphone jack but with a more engaged listen and some more time on my hands i found this to be heavily superior!
The FIIO L3 LOD is a great addition to my music gear because iPod headphone jack is made from low quality materials which produces low quality sound. The L3 LOD cable bypasses these materials and reduces the noise you will hear on your headphones. This is important because the iPod LOD is a better quality connector than the 3.5mm (1/8-inch) headphone jack. So by using the L3, you are connecting a better quality adapter to a better quality jack on your iPod.
The iPod really isn't the best music player for audio quality on the market, but the L3 improves the audio significantly by taking the audio directly from the LOD (I would use another music player, but the iPod is just so useful for so many other things that I live with the sound quality for now).
SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT USING THE L3 ADAPTER!
Something to know about using the L3 adapter is that when you plug it into your iPod dock jack, your volume function on the iPod disappears, both from the side of the iPod and the touch interface. When you use the L3 you will need another method of adjusting the volume. NOTE: It IS POSSIBLE to adapt the L3 for headphones using a female to female 3.5mm adapterC2G / Cables to Go - 03170 - 3.5mm Stereo Coupler F/F, but you will have no volume control. That's where a good headphone amplifier is needed. I use a FIIO E7FiiO E7 USB DAC and Portable Headphone Amplifier (Black). (I am not trying to sell FIIO products, it's just what I have)
I connect the L3 adapter to the 3.5mm input on a FIIO E7 Headphone Amplifier & Digital to Analog Converter (DAC). The FIIO E7 amplifies the input audio for headphones that require power to drive them. The E7 has 2 headphone jacks to share your music (and the amp boosts the signal to power headphones that require power for the incredible sound quality of which studio quality headphones are capable - here's an example:Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Professional Studio Monitor Headphones), but any amplifier with an 3.5mm input with volume control will work. I am able to adjust the volume of the music from my iPod using the E7 AMP/DAC. Other options are an iPod dock with volume control or any other amplifier with volume control. I just happen to have a FIIO AMP/DAC.
The L3 LOD helps you get the best sound you are going to get out of your iPod/iPhone and is also helpful if your iPod headphone jack is broken, just remember that you need a method to adjust volume and may consider adding some quality headphones to your music rig to hear the improvement of the depth and quality the L3 can help bring to your ears.
