I purchased this product after comparing roughly 3 MECHANICAL TenKeys across the internet. Frankly, the Mechanical TenKey market is stagnant at this time. You can only find 3 different TenKeys with Mechanical keyswitches (ignoring variants of the same product). TenKeys that compete with this one have several issues including moving keys around from what you are familiar, splitting the large plus key into 2 normal sized plus/minus keys, and adding extra buttons. Competitors tend to put some arbitrary keys on the (extra) top row. Keys like Fn, Shift, or Print Screen. Competitors will also add unnecessary functionality to the board, like media controls (this is where the Fn key would be used). You can even find ones covered in LEDs.
But Real Talk: I only wanted a portable TenKey with Mechanical switches at a good price. This Filco Majestouch TenKey is the best you will find that fills the description. I would have preferred to not pay around $50, but like I said this market is stagnant. I could have shelled out $100 for a much nicer version of this very TenKey from another company. But for twice the price, it doesn't seem worth it.
If you are a person looking for a mechanical TenKey that will serve not only as a Numpad, but also shift ancillary functions off of your main keyboard, then I would recommend looking at some the of competing TenKeys that I was talking about. As well, if you are looking for nice LEDs,then I would recommend the competition.
Pros:
-Very sturdy build. Though less dense than filco main boards.
-Browns provide some tactive feedback, but are quieter than blues.
-Expected Filco Reliability.
-Escape, Tab and Backspace keys are nice, so one does not have to venture back on to the main board often while doing data entry.
-The USB cable is extra long and flexible.
-Matches the look of most filco boards, though frame length is an issue.
Cons:
-Expensive.
-The Brown switches on the TenKey feel lighter than on the main boards.
-Not quite as heavy (doesn't have the steel backplate) of other Filcos.
-Non-adjustable feet. It lays too flat for my tastes and I have to put a pack of post-it notes to match the angle of my Majestouch main board.
-It's longer frame (deeper) extends past where the TenKeyLess. It's
-Not available with the "ninja" keycaps that have the forward facing print.
-Only available in Browns. Would have like the option to have this in blues.
Overall: Best TenKey I've used so far, but there are some things that could be improved.
However there is slightly small complain/improvements that I wish Filco would make.
Firstly the packaging gave me seriously heart pain when I take out the pad and found out that throughout its journey way here the cables were seriouly squeezed. The packaging has a seriously tight size box to fit the pad and they had to squeeze the cables in there. Filco build quality undoubtly would be providing confidence that the cables would not easily get damaged. But this can be easily improved with boxes just a tad larger.
Secondly, from my angle of understanding this product. To provide for best portability for such form factor, I would rather that it adopt the detachable USB design so that it can reduce its size for transport. But this is not as much, since we can just bring the whole box out for transport, which comes back to the first point.
But overall, for the usage and experience so far, this is a really hand tool. It deserves a decent quality when It is a qualified filco product. and its feature would add on to its value. Some small changes could improve the product drastically.
I just didn't enjoy MX Browns so much on a keypad - they seem better suited to a full keyboard typing experience, but that's pretty subjective.
Considering how hard it is to find a nice MX Blue keypad these days, this is still probably your best bet for something that will send the proper numpad scancodes (watch out for Leopold keypads, they frequently send number row codes instead)
Also, the 00 is not so useful. Cool looking but not very useful, I found myself hitting it when I just wanted a 0.
Also, iirc this is not recognized at boot so you can't use it to enter numbers during that process which was kind of a bummer.
