The few specification links I could find on this product all mention cards up to only 32GB (SDHC). But I inserted a high-end Sony SDXC 64GB card (rated at 40MB/s transfer rate) and this Express Slot Adapter totally exceeded my expectations. I haven't tried one (LOL, I don't OWN one to be honest), but I see no reason why the 128 GB and 256 GB cards wouldn't work, too. Seriously blazing data transfer speeds in and out of the Sony card. _Seriously_ fast. Seated into the slot, the adapter fits flush with the computer's case, but the memory card itself sticks out ~1/2 inch when inserted. Could be a problem for some. If you can live with that, though: this thing rocks. Next up, I have to get a USB 3.0 Express Card. I wish I had known about Express Card adapters a long time ago. [UPDATE 08/22/2013]: I just bought OS X 10.8.4 Mountain Lion from Apple's App Store. After reading the reviews online, I did not want to install it on my MBP's internal drive. So I decided to install it on a Class 10 16GB SDHC card inserted in the Express Card adapter. I used Disk Utility to format the SDHC card properly, then directed the OS X installer to use that card as a boot disk. Installation went smoothly. Took all of about 20 minutes. Restarted my Mac, booting into Mountain Lion off the 16GB card! This card in this adapter is easily fast enough to serve as a boot disk. And I see no reason that it couldn't serve as a boot disk for Ubuntu, Red Hat, any flavor of Windows or any other Mac OS. Quite frankly, it's like having a little SSD in my laptop. The external apperance is just as shown in the picture. It looks very generic without the model number written anywhere on the card. The only identification is a SN. Using a Intel 320 80GB SSD with a USB 3.0 adapter, HD Tune showed a maximum of about 119 MB/s with the card. It meets my expectations for USB 3.0 and is significantly faster that USB 2.0. I purchased the card for a really great price from Amazon Marketplace so take a look there before purchasing the first one available. The chipset being used is NEC Electronics uPD720200 / NECEL-USB3-Host-Driver-10170-Setup-x86-x64-Binary.zip. The card could not support my SSD drive without the extra power cable. The included power cable is a Y-connector power cable. I recommend this Express card because it's cheap, works, and its fast. I experienced some problems with the card which was running firmware 3023. It originally worked, then stopped detecting USB devices. Then I tried it in another computer and it did not work. So I googled. I updated the firmware to 3025 and driver #2.1.28 and it is working well so far. Turbocharge Your MacBook Pro on the Cheap! (Hardware Review)

Background:

I bought my first Apple computer in June 2009 - I was a hardcore PC guy since the '80s, even though my work is heavily focused on graphic design and photography. This always came as a surprise to people since creatives have historically been associated with the Apple brand - so be it, whatever. Growing up with computers and not having a ton of extra cash, I always justified my PC-partisanship with the ol' "you get more bang for your buck" argument. However, as a youth, I spent many, many hours tinkering with my windows machines, figuring out problems 90% of the time. Since I was young and in school, I never thought to attach a dollar amount to my own time. Now that I'm a grownup, have a family and work a ton every week - I most definitely attach money to my time - and anything that saves me time saves me money. It didn't take long to discover that, after purchasing a 17" unibody MacBook Pro, this machine (and Apple in general), was going to save me a ton of money!

I apologize for the long-winded intro, but a little background provides context to better understand my motivation. Being frugal by nature, I'm always on the lookout for things that will improve my workflow - the more time I can save, the more billable hours I have available to the world. And if a product happens to accomplish this, and is inexpensive - I have to try it out.

What's this little slot for?

Many MacBook Pros have a small ExpressCard/34 slot on the side; only the 17" unibody models have it now, but I believe older MacBook Pros have them. I recently read about a Solid State Drive (SSD) that fits in the small ExpressCard slot - there's not much use for this port, and I doubt many people even use it - but anything that does fit it can take advantage of the amazing 3Gb/sec throughput provided by the internal eSATA connection. By putting an SSD in this slot, you can easily supercharge your mac!

I won't get into the nitty gritty details of why SSDs are so much better (see: faster) than conventional hard drives, but believe me when I say they offer many advantages over their mechanical, spinning counterparts. You can use an SSD in place of the hard drive in your MacBook Pro - but they are 3 to 4 times as expensive right now - and typically at lower capacities. So unless you're independently wealthy or don't mind eating ramen for a few months, you're probably not rocking an internal SSD in your laptop.

Good, fast and cheap? You don't say...

Last year Wintec released their Filemate 48GB ExpressCard SSD - what makes this card special is threefold. First, it's cheap. And by cheap I mean inexpensive. I picked one up for $140, shipped (it seems to fluctuate in price by $30). Second, it's FAST - especially its read performance - often exceeding 120MB/sec. Third, it's bootable. 48 Gigs isn't huge, especially compared to the MacBook Pro's internal 500GB hard drive. But 48GB is plenty of space for the Snow Leopard operating system and a good number of applications.

After reading the reviews on amazon & newegg it was with much trepidation I purchased this card. I was very concerned about the reliability of the card!

I was inspired by the MacWorld article and subsequent posts by others who attempted to use this card as a boot drive on their Macbook Pro. After a couple months of usage, I can't be more happy with the results.

If you have an older Macbook Pro, getting this expresscard SSD is the upgrade you can make to your machine after you've maxed out your RAM. It brings SSD speed to your machine while still being able to take advantage of a standard platter HDD for larger space requirements. Reviews are right in the sense that the slot does get a little warm from usage, but it isn't unbearably so. In my Macbook Pro 5,1 model, I found the slot to be very tight and I will need tweezers to pull out the drive when I don't need it anymore. Those who are hoping to pull this out on a regular basis should take this into consideration.

The drive is as fast as advertised and has breathed new life into my 2 year old machine. Very worth the risk if you are willing to go a couple rounds of RMA'ing; I lucked out with one that worked great the first time!

Not as fast as a regular SSD 2.5 drive; runs hots; but faster then a regular drive

I bought this to add some additional storage to my Lenovo Thinkpad t500; previously I installed an intel ssd drive 160 GB. Because I run Linux as my primary OS and use windows XP with vmware to run windows dependent applications I need about 40 GB to store the vmware image files for Windows XP. I noticed that the performance of the vmware image was somewhat affected by the transfer, periodically the vmware guest operating system (Windows XP) seems to become unresponsive for a few seconds. Re-starting the vmware image seems to alleviate the effect somewhat. Overall I find this product useful in comparison to other non solid state drives and less expensive compared to other solid state drives; however the real value proposition is being able to use the pci express slot on my thinkpad. The other alternative I have been considering is swapping out the cdrom drive and replacing it with another ssd drive; using the pci express card as backup when I need to run the cd drive in combination with the regular os. The card runs hot in my computer, this maybe the reason one of the other reviewers' card died after 5 months. The drive comes with a small usb cable so you can run the drive as an external ssd device.

overheats to the point of sometimes malfunctioning

Overheats to the point that sometimes it malfunctions. If I use it with a USB cable I can just put a fan or something on it, but when its in a expresscard slot, the way you'd normally want to use it, it's hard to cool because its inside the laptop of course. However, it is an SSD and is quite fast as you would expect. I used this as a boot device in a couple older Macbook Pros, a Core Duo and a Core 2 Duo, for which it worked pretty good except for the caveats given. Please note that most laptops can't boot from Expresscard, some Macs can though.
