OK people, I took one for the team and bought this blind without hearing
samples. I've loved this band for years. When I saw that Rhino Handmade
was releasing this double live disc of a 1968 Fillmore concert of Iron
Butterfly, I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame, regardless of price.

First, let's get the bad news out of the way. This is not a cheap purchase.
Rhino Handmade traditionally makes a limited amount of copies of any given
release available to the public. I did initially go to Rhino's website to
see if I could buy it cheaper from the source, but found many negative
reviews of transactions by going direct. One of them was high shipping fees.
The other downside is that 6 of the 22 songs are repeated multiple times
over the course of 4 sets over a 2 night stint at the Fillmore East.

Songs performed are largely culled from the "Heavy" LP (Fields of Sun, You
Can't Win, Unconscious Power, So-Lo, Iron Butterfly Theme, Stamped Ideas
& Possession). One song is taken from the "Ball" LP (Her Favorite Style)
and the remaining tracks are from "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (Are You Happy?,
My Mirage & the title track).

Now for the good news...this is NOT a bootleg!! The sound is quite good.
The instrument separation is excellent. The vocals on a couple tracks seem
distant but that could be because Doug was too far from the mike...Other
than that a big thumbs up for sound quality.

The one odd thing I found was that Iron Butterfly are VERY tight & disiplined
in concert. Remember this was recorded during the 1968 acid-age era. They
perform all the songs, with the exception of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida & Iron Butterfly
Theme, record perfect.

I was hesitant to pay a large sum for this, but I have been looking for a good quality live recording from this period of the band. I have one boot that pales in comparison to the sonic quality of this release. This recording is from a 4 track reel-to-reel and the liner notes explain what was done to restore the tapes. Why it took so long for it to be released is unfathomable. Many of the old hippies who would love to hear it are getting up in years [I turn 60 in a few months]. Thankfully I'm not too old to enjoy it. I cranked it up through my tower stereo speakers with 200 watts of power per channel and was transported back in time to early 1968. Wish I had the light show to go with it. This is great! Iron Butterfly with Eric Brann in their prime. Outstanding, thanks to all involved who brought this to market.

I am addicted to Iron Butterfly since the very first time I've heard them in the end of the 60s, the irony is that it happened behind the Iron Curtain. Therefore, this is strictly my personal opinion, and I do not try to be objective.
First of all, this album is an excellent introduction of real values for any fan "stoner" rock, because the music was born long before some smart XXX coined the term (the word was invented, OK, but what about music? To get stoned is the easiest part of the trade), and back then it was known as psychedelia or acid*.
There was only one Iron Butterfly, a mesmerizing, powerful and innovative act from Los Angeles, an epitome of psychedelia brushing with hard`n'heavy. The inimitable combination of monumental voice (like the symbols of totalitarian regime) with church organ and the rhythm of walking dinosaur (Robert Shelton, a reputable NY critic, called it "death-march pace") turned Iron Butterfly into "a lasting definition of heavy rock" (quote from excellent notes of David Fricke for this album).
A useful (or helpful?) hint - the band is still alive, at least its spirit and music. It has an official website, from where until recently one could obtain the same CD autographed by Ron Bushy and Lee Dorman, plus piles of other merchandise, - which I advise you to do.
I agree that this CD doesn't come cheap, but it's really worth it, I would have readily paid more (look, one easily spends that much and even more on going out, and nothing is left after but hangover).

while the is a lot of bad Iron Butterfly out there. This is the best recording of Butterfly Live that is out there besides the Butterfly Live we all bought at the Record store . Like all Fillmore recordings this is not cut or taken over 4 day concert and then picked out the best like the record company does. It is just like you are back at the Fillmore when it was new and you are in the front row kicking back and hearing the band for the first time
