Turns out Chris Noel had a very small part in the film. She's only in the movie about 10 minutes, but she was on set long enough to make some interesting observations about Steve McQueen and Jackie Gleason and what was going on behind the scenes. She also revealed a few details about her brief affair with Steve McQueen during the filming.
As a McQueen fan, I enjoyed the layout of the book which includes reprints of movie ads, movie reviews from the time and lots of publicity and movie still photos. It's like a handbook to the film and it puts the movie and its stars into context when it was filmed in 1963.
As described in the book, the reason 'Solder in the Rain' is one of McQueen's lesser-known films is because it came out only a few days after President Kennedy was killed. The film didn't get much attention and got mixed reviews.
Although there isn't a lot of original text, the book is very well done. I wish there was a book like this for every Steve McQueen film!
