Lucian's story gives a feel of the family dynamics along with his story. He is the eldest. A strong alpha male who knows what he wants. Once he sets his sights on Jordyn, he is a man on a mission. A mission to protect his family and Jordyn. He is Marcello strong.
Giovanni's story shows us what it is like to be the youngest in the Marcello crime family. He is standoffish to outsiders although he loves the ladies. He does his job as a Capo well. It is what he loves about his life. This is until he meets Kim.
Dante's story is about a shift in the family and how it changes him. He needs to lead the family in his way in the direction he wants. In order to do this, he has to have a woman by his side. Catrina is this woman for him. A partner in all sides of life. She is one of the strongest woman characters I have read in a long time. Dante isn't even ready for how strong she is.
Antony's story gives us background on him, Cecelia and the family. I loved both of them in the prior books, so it was exciting to read their story. The story of how they became filthy. The story of Antony's role in La Cosa Nostra.
This series provides intrigue and suspense. The Marcello family continues to live life as a strong family along with a strong Mafia crew. They are unique in their strength for each other. This is one of my ultimate favorite mafia romance series. Thanks, Bethany-Kris. I love these filthy boys.
My only pet peeve(s) is lack of description on physical appearance of characters (mostly males, including the Marcellos themselves) - I don't know if that was deliberate as some sort of 'paint your own picture' gimmick by the author, but I didn't like it. If I come away from the book with a blank face for the male lead, well, that's not a good thing.
Also, the characters tend to use the same phrases (eg. I think every lead couple at one point used the words "you're awful" or "that's awful") which didn't really help bring individuality to them.
Overall though, an impressive series by the author and I definitely want to read more of her work.
Antony, Filthy Marcellos #.05 : Antony's journey to being the Boss was a brilliant introduction to the harsh realities of the life he was born into. The oath they elect to take to be a made man was akin to selling your soul to the devil. Considering Sunday Mass, followed by a family meal was a weekly ritual not to be missed, their oath sat eerily aside their Sunday masks compared to their working week.
Antony is a character who gained my admiration from the time he was introduced to the final moment shared with his son. The words they exchanged were few but they radiated so much. 5 Stars
(15%) Lucian, Filthy Marcellos #1: Lucian emulated both his biological and adopted father as a son in an admirable manner, filling his parents with pride. He was a genuine character who fit in perfectly into the Marcello family. Jordyn may not have met the criteria to sit at the family table as 'family', never faltering, holding her own magnificently.
I was able to pick the plot twist early on but not the rationale behind the mayhem being caused. Lucian and Jordyn are both people who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, tragic beginnings in life and neither of them allowed their past to consume other consume their future. They were a match made in heaven. Again, another 5 Stars from me
(40%) Giovanni, Filthy Marcellos #2: Curious as to why the party boy has been chosen next. Gio gets away with a lot because he gets the job done. Antony's youngest son has always stressed his family out with living on the edge and terrifying them he would fall. When a one night stand gets under his skin, he begins to make choices taking his previous risk-taking choices to a death-wish level. The self-assured woman he had met took his breath away and discovered too late she was someone a wise man in his life should have steered clear of. Love knows no rules. The boundaries they have to cross are massive and, at first, appear impossible. Gio is a man who doesn't lose when he goes after something or someone. While I was entranced by Gio and Kim, at times their plight was hard to believe. A book where I had a running rating going through my head. It started off at 5 Stars, then dipped to 4 returning to 4.5 possibly 5 stars.
(65%) Dante, Filthy Marcellos #3: Dante is being slowly given more and more control and it was in one of his moments of being Boss, where he is thrown into a situation I hadn’t expected at all. The woman he happens to meet was nothing like I imagined for Dante. I had no time for the Queen who wanted to be his. This was nothing like Lucien or Gio's stories of how they met the love of their lives. The pressure has always been on Dante as the heir apparent to find himself a suitable wife. Catrina Danzi, was not good enough for Dante in my opinion, I wanted better for Antony & Cecilia's son. She didn't represent the path to happiness for Dante in my mind. Somehow, though, Bethany-Kris turned my opinion around and I ended up warming to her.
In a world where women are admired, respected and revered, Catrina uses this to her advantage and puts a proposition to Dante he happily accepts. It's a win, win situation for them both but it was the lack of transparency that had me worried along with the fact she was a well-practiced manipulator. I couldn't see how their partnership could work. I obviously lacked faith because by the end of Dante's story I was so glad I pushed through my prejudices towards Catrina. I should have had more trust in a Marcello man to hold face. 5 Stars
94% Legacy (A Legacy Prequel): This is where we now meet Antony's grandchildren as they make their way in the family business. Considering they were children in the previous three books, the story flowed remarkably well. Each generation stretches the rules of life a little further than the last generation. Pushing the boundaries removes the protection they provide letting danger into their already dangerous lives. The prequel is a short tease for what's to come. Needless to say, I have been sucked into the Marcello family in a big way and can't wait to read on. 4.5 Stars
