In a nutshell:
Sure, it filters better than the Lifestraw. No doubt. I tested with manually (no viruses or bacterias mind you) contaminated water and inspected the result with a microscope. Couldn't fault it. The lifestraw let some stuff through, this one did not. Nada.
It's HARD to draw water from this. You might die of exhaustion before you get 100ml of water in your mouth. Plus, the water has to be prefiltered and very clear or you won't get any water at all through the filter! Even little pieces of ~0.5mm will block the filter flow.
So there's a few prefilters included, use them, or this wont work (that means you can use the straw about 5 times then you're out of filters by the way).
With clear water, you still need to suck on it and pressure the bottle to help to get a half-decent flow of water (which won't be fast, plan 5 full minutes to drink a small glass of water).
Then comes the cleaning. The tiny plunger is cool and works, but you'll have to use it about 10-15 times to properly clean a mildly dirty filter, while shaking the filter manually between the back flushes.
In comparison, the life straw flaws about as fast as unfiltered water, which is very comfortable.
if you don't need the virus filtration (which is also unverified, anyway), get the lifestraw. if you do or value the higher filtration, the personal water filter purifier might be good enough. Just don't expect to use it as easily. I'd take a survivor filter (incl. the pump activated) or other brands any day if you're going to use this often though, including the lifestraw+steripen (UV kills most viruses) combo which is pretty decent, light, and much faster.
This little kit comes with everything you need including a backwash syringe to clean it out, a longer hose (which I did not use yet) for hard to reach areas of water, and a bladder to hold water to carry with you, and the pre-filter with extra filters. The straw attaches right to the bladder so you can drink your filtered water from the bladder through the straw.
I am keeping mine in the box where it all fits nicely for now, but I will make a little bag with a draw string to hold all the pieces.
Note that they tell you it is good for one year from the first use of it, make sure you write that date on the straw so you are aware when to purchase a new one or that date is running close so you don't get sick. If you haven't used it you can store it indefinitely.
Now I need to purchase another one for my bug out bag. I am looking at their piezo camp stoves right now :-)
To make this last as long as possible, use the clearest water you can find, use the little blue add-on filter, and backwash every time you use it. Just remember, water from a street gutter is not a good source, because of all the chemical contaminates that might be in it. This is for dirt, microbes, and insect contamination, not oil, anti-freeze and cleaners!
Picture 1 shows the bag screwed into the base, 2 shows the long folded tube attached to the base. you can also take off the short tube from the blue filter and attach it to the end of the long tube. Picture 3 shows the blue filter and the disk replacement filters for it (you get 6 total), and 4 shows the back-flow set-up. The plunger tube snugs 'into' not 'over' the mouth piece and the small blue filter's tube as well.
This was one of the Eteckcity products that I could get free or at reduced price in exchange for a review. I won't 'guess' if it works I won't say something I don't believe. This my honest opinion of a product I acquired to use personally.
