Product Description

17 1/2" X 23 1/2" X 1" Filtrete Micro Allergen Reduction Filter from 3M - #9829 - 6 pack The Filtrete Micro Allergen Reduction Filter carries a 3M Microparticle Performance Rating (MPR) of 1000 - roughly equivalent to a MERV 11 rating Click here for detailed comparison of 3M Filtrete 1" Filters Features: Meets the American Lung Association Health House Indoor Air Quality Guidelines No unnecessary antimicrobial chemicals added; Filtrete filtering material will not support the growth of bacteria, mold, mildew or fungi in normal use Contains electrostatically charged media to filter and attract particles in the airAttracts and captures large allergens like: Pollen Mold spores   Dust mite debrisAttracts and captures microscopic allergens like: Smoke Pet dander Household dust Smog * This filter should be changed at least every 3 months.  Certain conditions in your home will significantly add particles to the air - this will cause the filter to capture more particles, shortening it's life to less than 3 months.  These conditions would include: dirty ductwork, pets, construction work, sanding projects, tobacco smoke, burning candles, fireplaces and wood-burning stoves. WHY USE MPR RATHER THAN MERV RATING? The  Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry uses the ASHRAE 52.2 Standard, which assigns a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) to a filter. One part of MERV reports a filter's ability to capture medium to large particles between 1 and 10 microns. This value is helpful in comparing the performance of different filters but it is not adequate alone because particles greater than one micron make up only about 1% of the contaminants in your indoor air. Another part of MERV addresses submicron particles. 3M calls this the MPR or Microparticle Performance Rating. It measures a filter's ability to capture particles b

These are great- just be careful that too much filtration can OVERHEAT your heat and air units

I was using the Filtrete dark blue 1500 rated filters and thought they were great. But eventually I found the air flow was less and less and then it almost stopped altogether. I had to call my Heat/ AC guys and they told me that if I used the higher rated filter (1500 or so, different for each system), the one that 'stopped' more allergens/ dust/ etc, that these high rated ones fill up quickly with all the gunk the catch, and that they can slow down the air flow so much that it may cause your heat/ AC machinery to overheat and damage itself.

He switched me to the red Filtretes- they are rated 1000 and not 1500. If you truly need higher levels of filtration, make sure your heat/ ac system can handle it, and maybe you have to change the filters more often (the really highly rated filters grab EVERYTHING so all the dust etc builds up much more quickly and could block the air flow entirely in less time than say the red 1000 ones. So stay as low as you can on the ratings, but if you have to block extra things like dust or mites or allergens, ask your heat/ AC guy to tell you which filter to use, knowing it will capture this much dust/mites/ allergens, and how often you have to change it. Hope that helped, and good luck

ps I myself am going to ask them if i can use the higher rated filters- say the 1500s- if i switch them out much more often. we'll see.

My house uses forced air for heating. The disadvantage of such a system is that it distributes the dust in the air everywhere in the house. However, it is supposed to be possible to filter out the dust. Over the years, I have steadily increased the quality of the filter that I use for my forced air heating system. However, until now I have not noticed any obvious difference in my allergic reactions that seem to start with the heating season.

There are two cats in my house. I have read that cat dander, tiny flakes of cat skin shed by the cats, is five times smaller than household dust particles. It stays in the air much longer than ordinary dust before it settles. Because of its small size it requires a more efficient filter to get it out of the air.

Until this year, I have used of variety of filters with mixed results. However, this year, I started using the 3M Advanced Allergen Filters, the ones in the blue wrapper. These have a 3M Microparticle Performance Rating of 1500, but do not have a MERV rating listed. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value and is a number from 1 to 12, produced from a test designed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). A higher MERV rating indicates better filter performance. 3M uses particle data between 0.3 and 1.0 micron size to calculate a Microparticle Performance Rating or MPR. The higher the MPR, the better the filter. However, higher rated filters cost more.

I installed this filter (1000 MPR) and my air handler could not handle it. The filter restricted so much air flow going into my unit that to coils completely froze. Luckily it wasn't too late when I noticed so I replaced the filter with a less restrictive one and the A/C kept working fine. I'm not saying it's a bad filter, just that it was too much filtration for my specific unit which is about 8 years old. A filter rated at 600 MPR or less works better for me. Recomment trying it if your A/C can handle it. Otherwise go with less filtration. I returned mine for a full refund with no problems from Amazon.

I was ready to buy this 6-pack again but decided to go visit the local hardware store with my calculator just to be sure I was saving money. The 1000 MPR Filtrete 6-pack price makes the filters $12.60 each. At Home Depot they are $10.70 and with our TN 9.25% sales tax that makes the filter $11.69 - so not a bargain through Amazon. I priced the 600 MPR and the 1500 MPR also and they aren't cheaper buying through Amazon either. Maybe for around $5.50 difference for the 1000 MP 6-pack it's worth having them delivered to your door. I may have just talked myself into buying these through Amazon again...!

Having a new baby in the house I wanted to have the best air quality so I purchased this filter locally. Fast forward to 9 weeks after I put it in and the temperature in the house drops to 63, despite the furnace kicking on. It's between 9-26 degrees outside in Dec in MN when this happened. We pulled the filter out and it looked fine, we've had other filters look much more black than this one before without any issues. Thus had an HVAC guy come out, first thing he did was he looked at the filter and put it back in as it looked clean enough. After a bit more looking at the system and the error code, he pulled the filter out again and let it run... It heated to 70 within a few minutes!?! The issue/error code was a block in the return air = filter was not allowing enough airflow. HVAC guy said to just buy the cheapest pleated filters and change them monthly (about 3 dollars each locally). He said with a high efficiency furnace (ours is only about 5 years old) these super restrictive 3M filters can cause the system to error and not run. Lesson learned: more money does not always equal better. Feel so dumb because 3 different adults looked at the filter and put it back in thinking "that couldn't be the problem, it's pretty clean" and instead paid over 200 to the HVAC guy to tell us to change the filter.
