I bought 3 books in the Crosswhite series and cannot believe they have so many 4 and 5 star ratings. The BEST thing I can say about these books is that you can read/listen to them in any order and it doesn't matter. Each book tells a whole story from beginning to end so you don't need to follow a trail in this series. That's the ONLY good thing about them!

The reason you can read these books in any order is because these books tell the same story over and over again! Beautiful, young, female, top-notch detective investigating old cases involving missing women who end up dead. Each ends up being murder (of course) with wrongful prosecution and/or cause of death resulting from incompetent and corrupt law enforcement behind a shady cover up. The beautiful young detective is stalked by every crazed psychopath within a 100 mile radius...making me ponder if they'd run into each other a time or two while watching her through her bedroom window or at the local Starbucks...hey, maybe they met for coffee to watch her together!?!? In each book, our sharp little detective also trusts her gut instincts and puts together the tiniest of puzzle pieces to uncover the cover ups, solve the crime and bring justice to all...yet she misses the BIG things like a male being in her home while she's out and leaving the toilet seat up, her backyard motion detectors being tripped multiple times when she's home alone, a snow covered car with a clear windshield in multiple locations, her cat being locked outside of her "fortress" home when she knew he had been locked inside...these glaring clues, she shrugs off...so ridiculous. In each book, it is snowing or raining in each of her investigations as well so the detective and other characters are either brushing the snow from their faces or feeling the rain trickle down their backs. Despite the stories taking place in different places/settings, having different characters and different details about the murders and cover-ups, the tale unfolds exactly the same in every book making what I presume the author intended as plot twists so painfully predictable. You know those books that make you roll your eyes and blurt out, "Oh for goodness sakes." or something a little more colorful? Well, these are those books tenfold.

Additionally, the author fixates on specific words and phrases and repeats them over and over...bare light bulbs hanging overhead, the ability to complete a sex act in the time it takes to boil pasta, fending off the cat while trying to open a can of cat food and the word "glock"...never "her gun" or "her service weapon" or "her side arm"...always glock...and you'd be hard pressed to find one paragraph in any of these books that does not reference her glock. It's annoying enough to have to deal with all this repetition in a single book but, when it repeats in ALL of the books, it becomes intolerable.

I gave the first book, "My Sister's Grave" a 3 star because, as a stand alone, it would have been an average read. With regards to the other two books, I could not be nearly as forgiving or kind. Additionally, the reader in the audiobook is terrible at age and gender inflection. Ugh...

Good, but gaping plot inconsistencies *minor spoilers*

This book is pretty good as far as your basic crime novels go, but there is a gaping hole in the plot that I couldn't get past.

The premise is that a serial killer is targeting women, but not sexually assaulting them as would be expected. All of the victims are noted to have had no signs of having sexual contact within 72 hours of the attack in order to make it clear that this is not part of the killer's MO. But in order to frame other suspects, it is also said that the killer specifically makes his move *right after* the women have been with other men that they were intimate with, usually within the hour. So they absolutely would have shown signs of sexual activity and the detectives wouldn't have been able to say until the truth came out that it wasn't with the killer.

You can't have it both ways! Not sure if the author didn't put this together or was just hoping no one else would just because it served different aspects of the story for both contradictory ideas to be true.

So the book was good for mindless entertainment, but I get annoyed when there are glaring inconsistencies like this.

This novel was a little predictable, but I like the main character and the writing style of the author. I was a bit disappointed in the ending and was hoping for a different outcome, but in hind-sight I guess it was appropriate. This novel has two story lines, which I liked, but it seemed to get in the way of what appears to be the main story line. I do like how the author incorporated aspects of the previous novels and in this story it calls the reader back to those scenes. I like that because, while at the time they seemed incidental, they are pivotal to the stories in this novel.

Her Final Breath is the second book in the Tracy Crosswhite series, and follows the excellent My Sister’s Grave, which I read recently. My dilemma was choosing between proceeding to book 2, or jumping forward to Book 7, whose review is now two weeks overdue. I’m glad I picked option 1 as this one was a much more typical police procedural, setting up Tracy’s role within her team, and moves on from the aftermath of book one, which means I won’t feel like I’ve missed to much when I skip forward. I figure this was the author also gets more reviews, although given the number already up here, it’s not like he needs them!

A few weeks after returning to Seattle after finally solving her sister’s murder, Tracy is back on the hunt for the serial killer dubbed The Cowboy, who has been hog-tying exotic dancers in motel rooms so that they are forced to strangle themselves. Her captain, the obnoxious Johnny Nolasco, is setting her up to fail over his longstanding petty jealousy, and he has a predatory reporter on standby to make her disgrace as public as possible. Discovering that an earlier case with similar traits was closed by Nolasco nine years earlier, she knows he will block attempts to investigate it, so she puts her boyfriend Dan the attorney on the case, but with an obsessed stalker watching her house, her trusty Glock might not be enough to save her...

I’m really enjoying Dugoni’s writing as he creates believable and interesting characters in a twisty plot that follows classic serial killer tropes but still managed to keep me guessing.
Nolasco is a brilliant love-to-hate antagonist and Tracy is a sympathetic mix of bravery and compassion, with her team providing some welcome comic relief. The most stressful part was worrying that something awful would happen to Roger, Tracy’s poor neglected cat. It’s OK, nothing does! I’m looking forward to continuing reading about her adventures very soon.

This is a review of the whole 6-book Tracy Crosswhite series. I read them all in one fell swoop (buying a new one in Kindle when I finished the previous one), which just explains why it always pays to write books with the same central character (Harry Potter as the obvious recent example, although thrillers seem to be the major genre where the same hero keeps the thing together). Tracy Crosswhite is a relatively complex figure: woman, gun-crazy, almost pathologically obsessed with the'murder of her sister, who becomes a police for this reason, as a person quite nice and empathetic, politically relatively liberal, no racist etc (but still critical towards the extreme liberality of the Seattle scene) who develops from a small town girl into an urbane cop, married woman and finally mother at 40. The first crime is the murder of Tracy's sister which goes unsolved during 20 years and which finally unravels in the first book. In the second colume, another long dormant pathological serial killer lets the women he kills strangle themselves burning their feet with cigarettes to make the process faster. In the third book, we have again an old murder which has been written off as a suicide which an old policeman has been trying to solve and which Tracy Crosswhite works on as a hobby. And of course solves it using new technology and good trackers. In Trapped Girl, the woman discovered in a crab pot seems to be a clear case, until she is found alive, and everything is turned upside down. In the fifth book, the obvious suspect is let go when the evidence goes missing, but after diligent work, the pieces fall in place. In the final volume, Close to Home, we have a case of family girl going missing while Tracy Crosswhite is already visibly pregnant although trying to hide it. During the series, you get to know several other characters, the two colleagues Del and Fazzio who have previously been only funny and loyal characters become more and more complex with the introduction of their families and family problems (the death of Del's nephew or the cancer diagnosis of Fazzio). Also the slow development of Tracy's affair with an old schoolmate who has moved back to the small town where Tracy's sister was killed, lasts almost the whole book, so that they get married only in the fourth volume and try to get child in the fifth, makes the series more interesting (but it must be admitted that it is at times rather slow...). There is also the obligatory unpleasant chief with whom Crosswhite clashes a few times per book, but who never succeeds. And a few corrupt policemen who make the work more difficult and dangerous. I must admit that I found the Crosswhite character at times a bit improbable, but finally likable. The proof being that I went through the full series without interruption!

Detective Tracy Crosswhite is hunting down a serial killer; a nasty piece of work dubbed “The Cowboy” because of his modus operandi: placing a noose around his victims’ necks and hog tying them so that they eventually strangle themselves. The murdered women are all exotic dancers who’ve been offering after-hours favors to clients. When Tracy uncovers a link to a similar case from 10 years ago, for which someone was apparently wrongly convicted, she risks ruffling feathers in the upper echelons of the force and must use all her investigative nous to root out the killer, while holding onto her job. Her task is further complicated by the existence of an obsessive stalker hanging around her home.

Her Final Breath is a classic police procedural, with a delicately woven plot and carefully paced build-up to a dramatic conclusion that fairly races off the page. There are twists and turns aplenty, a bad-guy boss, and even a nice bit of love-interest to add a softer counterpoint to the tough stuff. Dugoni has a very easy writing style and develops a great plot without it being overly complex, meaning you can dip in and out of the book without losing track. His heroine, Tracy, is a highly likeable character, with many facets to her personality, who can be better understood if you’ve read the first book in this series - My Sister’s Grave. I look forward to following her adventures further.

In the first book I only gave 4 stars because the ending didn't conclude the stripper/dancer motel story & the budding romance was open-ended... Turns out I only had to wait for the next book to have both things sorted & wrapped up brilliantly; therefore no cause for complaint here & another superbly written story

Has to be 5 stars as I couldn't find any flaws in characterisation, plot, description or narrative... Possibly, if I'm clutching at straws there were lots of possible suspects & it made it difficult to remember who's who but that isn't a flaw in writing, just in my memory...

I'm aware this is book 2 in a lengthy series which I am very pleased about as I can't wait to keep reading about Tracy Crosswhite & colleagues... Enjoying it so much!

Once again this story had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't stop turning the pages, waiting to learn if they'd finally caught the criminal, 'The Cowboy'. Full of twists and turns. This story will have you lost in a maze as you try to figure out, who is the real killer? Nolasco, Tracy's boss, what a complete waste of space he is. Always trying to find a way to get Tracy thrown off the force, but Kharma came back at him and hit him where he deserved to be hit.
Can't wait to read book 3 and found out what happens to Nolasco. Will he be thrown off the force? I hope so. I have a feeling that Nolasco hasn't yet finished with trying to hurt Tracy.

I was so fired up with "My Sister's Grave" that I read this immediately afterwards. This probably helped to heighten the contrast between the two books. Although "Her Final Breath" started well (I had looked at at least part of the sample), I found that without Tracy's intensely personal connection with the investigation, it all fell a little flat; the raw emotion of her search for the truth about her sister was the real driving force in the earlier novel but in this one there was nothing to replace it and make the story really stand out. I also found the characterisation of her team so sketchy that I could hardly tell them apart, which was a shame - some distinct individuals would have added to the depth of the story. Even Trscy herself lacked the depth which she had gradually acquired in "My Sister's Grave". Sadly, I am undecided as to whether to pursue the series; I had previously I had found a new detective, with a character and skills all her own, to follow!
