Hitoshi Sakimoto probably doesn't sound familiar to most Final Fantasy fans at first. But actually he has done quite a few popular games. Hitoshi Sakimoto has composed the soundtracks for the Ogre Battle series (most notably Tactics Ogre), Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Vagrant Story to name just a little bit of his more famous works. Often times his tracks are a bit more epic and bombastic than that of Nobuo Uematsu. This has caused for some alarm. While no one would doubt that Final Fantasy Tactics or Vagrant Story had amazing soundtracks, for instance, some would argue that some parts of Final Fantasy XII's soundtrack are missing an emotional punch as a result. Indeed Nobuo Uematsu certainly had more emotionally engrossing soundtracks (for instance, Aerith's Theme in Final Fantasy VII or Marle's theme in Chrono Trigger). But then again, Nobuo Uematsu was also doing the soundtrack for some very emotionally involving games. Final Fantasy XII was not a particularly character driven or emotionally driven experience. Therefore the soundtrack is more about complimenting the scale of the game and world it takes place in as opposed to finding a lot of strong themes for characters and situations.Read more ›
I bought the digital version of this soundtrack (as well as Hitoshi Sakimoto's soundtrack for Muramasa Rebirth Genroku Legends which I have never played) when it became available, but the quality was is not nearly as good as this CD. I can hear the individual instruments much more clearly, giving full depth of sound to such tracks as "Nalbina Fortress Underground Prison" and the different versions of "Sorrow" - tracks I tended to skip. I must also add that the CD contains Nobuo Uematsu's "Kiss Me Goodbye" which was not included in the iTunes album version.
One of the best pieces of orchestral work that I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.
