You could see immediately that the game was completely new, and I was surprised at how polished it was for an Alpha and also how much fun I was having - the complete opposite of my experience in version 1.0. It still had some issues, but it was easy to see even at that stage that there was something special going on there. I began more closely following the developments for the game at that stage and have to say it has been refreshing to see Square Enix finally becoming much more in touch with their fan base. They are actively seeking and listening to player feedback and making changes to the game experience based on this feedback all along the way. I think this is most largely attributed to the new director, Naoki Yoshida, who is a true MMO fan and experienced player and has done a fantastic job of translating this passion into the FFXIV relaunch.
I've been lucky enough to get in plenty of game time since the early access started last week and have quite simply had a blast. From varied melee and magic classes, to engaging crafting and gathering, to absolutely breathtaking visuals and music the game is entrancing. They have done a great job of giving the game that "Final Fantasy" atmosphere and feel, with many hat tips to previous games in the series (and from what I have read, they are planning on continuing to develop nostalgia FF content!) I also have to mention that the main story line so far has been the best I have experienced since FFXI Chains of Promathia, and from what I hear from players further along than myself, it just keeps getting better.
There have been server issues (as with most MMO launches) but SE has been very active in addressing these and communicating with the player base. There might still be a week or two of hiccups ahead, but it is well worth the wait! The director has outlined plans to release major new content patches every 3 months, so hopefully the technical frustrations of the first few days will be easily forgotten in the months/ years to come.
For the "casuals" - don't be afraid! I'm at a stage in life where I don't have more than a few hours a week to put into gaming, but the game really is designed well to accommodate at all levels. There is a wealth of available solo content, but there is also a built in grouping mechanic that can automatically match you up with other players from across all servers/ regions to accomplish group tasks. The tutorials in game do a great job of explaining all of this (and other game mechanics) so even if you don't have the time or have not experienced similar content in other MMOs, there is no need to stress about figuring it out here.
FFXIV A Realm Reborn is beautiful, accessible and fun! Whether you are a long time MMO vet or have never taken the MMO plunge, there is a very good chance you will find something wonderful here.
I like the FATE system which works a lot like Warhammer Online's public quests or GW2. These actually end up being one of the faster ways of leveling outside of questing which is important for your second, third, etc jobs. Because you can level sync and the return is very good, the FATEs often still have people at them unlike the abandoned nature of the GW2 and WO ones.
The storyline that I've experienced so far is pretty good. It's fairly standard Final Fantasy stuff so it's not too surprising, but ultimately enjoyable. I really love some of the edge that they put into some of the areas. Limsa Lominsa (one of the main towns) is a pirate haven and actually has a fair amount of in character swearing and backstabbing and such from the NPCs. It makes me happy to get my pirate on. Also, while some of the quests are definitely the grindy (kill 10 of x), sometimes you'll get a quest like that that has a twist. There's a character that tells you to go kill a certain number of something, and when you come back to tell you that you did it she explains that those creatures killed her fiancé and that she's been trying to get every adventurer to kill them in hopes of wiping them out as a way of dealing with grief.
The instanced dungeons are a lot of fun, especially with friends. The ones I've done so far aren't too hard, but they provide a good evening. The crafting system is interesting and gives some good reasons to diversify your crafting efforts as each craft can gain special abilities that you can use in other crafts. In fact, the entire dual-class and job change system is one of my favorite features carried over from FFXI. The fact that you can play multiple classes with the same character and even get some abilities of one class to use in another is really awesome. It makes it a lot easier to play with friends as you can often find some combination of jobs that are similar levels. For those times you can't, you can always go into a dungeon where you will level sync to be the same.
One thing I haven't been overly fond of is the fact that I'm a legacy player and playing on a legacy server. Currently due to some silly economic excuse, you can't transfer from a legacy to a non-legacy server (though you can transfer in the other direction). This made it very difficult to play with my friends because they were on a non-legacy server. Ultimately they had to both transfer to mine because I couldn't transfer to theirs. Luckily it was only two of them and they had no other friends at the time online so they were willing to make the transfer, but I've heard of other people who have a lot of friends on a non-legacy and it's impractical to transfer 20 people to 1 person's server rather than just letting that 1 person transfer. So far that's my biggest complaint of the system, and I have no idea when they'll remove that restriction.
A good MMO, solid story, fun quests, fun dungeons, interesting crafting system, and I'm enjoying myself. Not as punishing as FFXI, but probably not quite as rewarding either. Has a lot of WoW and GW2 elements, but that's not necessarily bad. The job system sets it apart from those, and the style and lore are very much a Final Fantasy sort of game. If you played version 1 and know any of the lore, the new story is neat since it's about the destruction of that old world. I'm hoping to play for a long time assuming the updates keep it up to par.
