To summarize everything in one sentence for the logophobics, Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) is a beautiful game, but it is very slow paced, and it is not for everyone. If you are into building your own story in your own world, surrounded by beautiful sceneries and mostly matured crowd of gamers, this game is definitely worth a shot. Modern MMORPGs such as WoW and Aion are fast and furious, high action spams, fat crits and most of the time resemble a giant team deathmatch with multi-player coop campaigns for pve element. To approach FFXIV this way, you will NOT like it. It can be described as comparing an action packed movie to a well written book. With that being said, let's go to the technical side of things.
Fun Factor: FFXIV is meant to be a very community based MMORPG, but can fit the all-you-can-eat-grind-buffet too, if that's the way you consume your MMOs. It is very fun, very addictive. It is cross-platform, and globally connected. Everyone in the world plays on the same server, there are no region locks. There's also an auto-translator function also.
Graphic: This game is beautiful, from the character models to the backgrounds. The choppy frame rate is gone since the first week of launch (after Nvidia and ATI finally update their drivers). I'm on a 3 years old system, intel quadcore with a NVIDIA 250GTS and it looks and play fine with 2x Anti Aliasing.
Sound: Great music that fits well to all the scenes, they were all composed by the legendary Nobue Uematsu. Though the battle music does get repetitive. If you like to lose yourself into the game, the music will blend you in anywhere in the game.
Cost: 40 dollars on amazon for regular copy, and 12 dollars per character (you will probably won't need a second one since you can change jobs on the fly by swapping your weapons. You can hire an NPC as storage and will auto bazaar your goods while you sleep (you don't have to be logged in).
Game Mechanic: Ok, this is where this game needs a some touch ups (which square enix swear to improve by late november/december (they also gave the people who endured this 3 months of free gameplay, just to show that they are serious. The current user interface is really clumsy and is not very responsive. Swapping your gears without the use of macros can be a real pain. There's no shortcuts for menus, everything is reached from the main menu, and most of the time, after a few clicks too many. The battle system is fine. It will though, needs some getting used to. It almost feels like an active turn based system (like the rest of the final fantasy francise), while the "active timer" is your stamina, you enter a command once to queue it, tap it twice to overide your previous command. Each command uses a portion of your stamina, which recharge slowly. There is no auto attack. Button smashing won't work here, at least not after level 10 or so when you fill up your action bar, and need to manage your stamina. The battle is composed of 90% decision and judgement, and 10% reflex, as opposed to other fast paced MMOs. This style of carries to the crafting and harvesting also. Deciding which method to craft and which "portion" of a tree to cut is very important in succeeding. Again, unless you moved from final fantasy 11, you will need to adjust yourself to a whole new way of playing.
Conclusion: This game has a lot of potential for the casual crowd of gamers with a taste in good storyline, graphics, and almost complete freedom in an MMO. You can choose to be dedicated to a certain craft, or a certain battle class, you can pick any style of play to play. The game pace is very slow compare to most other MMOs, but if you enjoy a relaxed, stress free gaming community, then pick up the game, and welcome to Eorza. The game is meant to be played on a controller, the 20 dollar six axix controller for the PS3 works fine if you need a suggestion. With the upcoming updates of content and UI improvements, I'm sure square enix will redeem themselves for their launch hiccups. It is definitely worth a try for casual/female gamers looking for a fun MMO to play.
Score: 8/10
The story of Final Fantasy XIV is one of the deepest stories you will come across in an MMO. Instead of pushing enter as quick as possible to get to your next quest like most MMOs, you are given your story in FFXIV like dinner on a Gold Platter. Instead of the story missions being the only way to get good gear like most MMOs, you do the story missions in Final Fantasy XIV because you want to see what is going to happen next, because everything that is happening feels epic and you truly want to know what's going to happen next. In order to get from level 10 to 20 you aren't going to "do the mission quest" in FFXIV, instead you are going to be notified that it's time to go to "place a" and trigger a Cut Scene, which will then progress your story.. instead of the system you get in other MMOs were the mission quest are either A) mixed in with the other exclamation points or B) a different color mixed in with all the other exclamation points. For a SquareEnix story it's very simple yet good, and isn't confusing.
The biggest change to this part of the game is the introduction of a "changing" world. Ever since 2.0's announcement the world of Eorzea has begun to change, at times it can seem as if there are just slight changes, but everything is changing. These changes have not started occurring without the watchful eye of the NPCs however, and as the world of Eorzea changes, the NPCs begin to talk about such changes, and new mission quest have emerged.
One such change is the job system and the update due out in February, when we first joined the NPCs on Eorzea the jobs were not Final Fantasy jobs.. but why? As the story has progressed we have learned that Eorzea had lost the skills of these jobs years ago, but due to the changes in the world we are slowly learning about the jobs of old, and skills that must be taught in order to gain these jobs. There is even a story behind why Eorzea is just now learning new jobs, even if these jobs are the ancient jobs of old! 9.5 / 10
GAMEPlAY:
Where to even begin.. At the beginning we had Final Fantasy XIV, that game is gone now, and what we have in it's place is something much better, much more fun and much easier to get into. Gone are the days of having to make each attack, gone are the days of having only 4 leve allowances a day or a cap of 8 anima to use for fast travel. Soloing is easier, mobs are more varied and we actually have "end game" like content even though the dev team does not plan on stopping this game at level 50. The battle system draws a whole lot of experience from Final Fantasy XI, but don't mistaken this comment to mean it is a clunky as XI's battle system was. They have upgraded the system in every way, have sped up the battles just slightly but at the same time have kept the same core principles they had in Final Fantasy XI that made XI such a deep and engaging MMO. Most people couldn't handle the slow and drawn out process of XI's leveling system, well don't worry because in XIV you can solo all the way to 50 and the battle system brings with it so many more useful abilities and traits than XI ever had!
The "taking forever to get everywhere" aspect of XIV has all but been removed from the game. You can save up to 99 anima to instantly teleport to different places throughout the world of Eorzea and we now have chocobos in order to get us to our destinations that much faster.
If you are looking for a game with more depth in the battle system than any other game on the market right now: look no farther than Final Fantasy XIV, and as we work our way towards 2.0, it will only get better. 10 / 10
DESIGN:
Easily my biggest knock on this game is the design of the game. This game looks INCREDIBLE, when I first signed on in January I couldn't believe how beautiful the game is even after a year and a half, but when SquareEnix decided to make this game, they also decided to make seamless zones with no loading screens. When you think about an MMO, a lot of times the most annoying part of the game is those dang loading screens, in theory getting rid of most of those in a game was one of the greatest ideas anyone could come up with! The problem possibly could have never been seen before it made it to past Beta testing, and unfortunately it degrades the quality of the game:
When you have that much data constantly being updated to only 5 zones in a game, you get server lag, and not just any server lag, worst server lag than I have ever felt in a game before. Way too much data, all the time. On top of this in order to create such a massive world (eorzea) with only 5, yes only 5, loading screens, they ended up reusing so many of the sprites, that sometimes I will run from one end of the zone to the other (about a 45 minute run) and see nothing but the exact same looking area OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. This make the world look smaller, and also makes the world look very dull.
All of this will be fixed in 2.0, they are bringing back zones, they are going to make the world bigger, and they are updating their servers.
This review is also about the things they HAVE fixed since Yoshi-P took over as well.. well they have added really cool battle areas that look extremely interesting underground and give a nice change of pace feel when you get into them. The moogle fight and ifrit fight areas also look extremely cool and the cities and character models still look extremely good. If you had told me a year and a half ago, after watching all of those reviews that at this point I would be saying the Design of this game was the weak part of this game, I would have laughed in your face, but because of how good this game has gotten over the last year, it really is. 6.5 / 10 (hopefully a 10 / 10 after 2.0)
PRESENTATION:
Yoshi-P has done it again. This game screams development time and a love for the work he is doing. The new jobs (old jobs) will ultimately replace the random jobs we currently have in the game. (after all once everyone has learned how to be a "Warrior" then there is no need to be Maurader anymore, because the skills of the "warrior" are no longer lost) I can not wait for the future of this game, and really enjoy it every day I play it. Hopefully Yoshi-P can keep up his quality and we will still have the best MMO experience available by the time 2.0 drops. 10 / 10
