Editorial Reviews
Review
“In every generation, God raises up one primary champion to contend for the authority and sufficiency of the written Word of God. In the sixteenth century, that valiant individual was Martin Luther. In the nineteenth century, the leading figure was Benjamin Breckinridge Warfield. I believe history will reveal that for the twenty-first century, John MacArthur has been that strong man who has stood immovable for the divine inspiration, inerrancy, and authority of Scripture. For more than half a century, MacArthur has advanced to the frontlines in the battle for the Bible and has fought the good fight to defend it against the relentless assaults of radical unbelief. Read this book, Final Word, and you will be fortified and emboldened in your faith.”
“At the bottom of many of the controversies plaguing the church today is the question of authority. Doctrinal errors and heresies thrive where Scripture is ignored or rejected. But God has spoken, and the Bible is His Final Word. No one in our generation has understood this more clearly nor defended it more courageously than John MacArthur. In this book he demonstrates—from Scripture itself—how and why God’s written Word must be recognized as the ultimate authority for people who confess Jesus as Lord. Such commitment to Scripture must never be assumed or else it will soon be lost. Read this book, and use it to help others understand how to live faithfully under the authority of Jesus Christ.”
“Final Word is a profound and, unfortunately, very necessary book. I say ‘unfortunately’ because this book addresses issues that have been raised and responded to for generations. The attacks to which it responds are neither new nor sophisticated. And that is what makes its necessity unfortunate. It is unfortunate that the enemies of the Bible must be confronted yet again. However, confront them we must, and that is precisely what John MacArthur does in Final Word. May this profound and necessary book bolster your faith in God’s Word as it answers questions, dispels myths, and reasserts the inerrancy, sufficiency, and beauty of the Scriptures.”

First, the average Christian isn’t highly motivated to study their own bibles because they really don’t understand what “Jesus has done for us or what we have in Jesus.” If only the preacher weekly stresses the basic gospel message, then one day those sleepy Christians will wake up and be on fire. The truth is that the more any important message is repeated over and over, the only result is the listeners daydream more or become hardened.
The second problem is that Macarthur assumes that by throwing out Greek and Hebrew words, somehow this will be an important key to excite the pew folk. No, rather the use of Greek and Hebrew merely creates a divide between the seminary-degreed and the regular folks. Hearing quotes from long-dead theologians is also not helpful.
Third, there seems to be a belief that only the degreed pastor has the God-given gift to understand “the deeper things of the Christian faith and bible.” The author only mentioned once that the Christian is to memorize parts of their bible. But, how much? What programs in MacArthur’s church does he have for testing or reciting scripture? If the bible is so important, then shouldn’t every pastor offer a detailed program and plan for members to practice skills of public speaking about their faith, writing essays exploring their personal journeys through the bible? But no, just more of the same plan. We come Sunday, sit, sing some songs, listen to a lecture about the basic gospel message, over and over. Then go home and turn on the television.
The fourth problem: there is a scriptural doctrine that is mentioned many times in the bible, but that is poorly explained in church or, just totally ignored. This book made no mention of the problems found in the bible. These problems are called, “stumbling blocks.” I personally as a youth, stumbled over the issue of the age of Noah. Since this caused so much confusion, I lay down the bible untouched for a year. The bible has many difficult sections and accounts that are ignored by pastors, including Dr. MacArthur since the concept of “stumbling blocks” was not mentioned in his book.
So, the evangelical church is losing millions of youth and older folks, but the same old solution is preached in this book. That is, the pastor’s quality of depth of scriptural knowledge is the key to excite and retain Christians. No, it is not working.
As a final thought, the Doctor’s book seems to be more than half full of quoted bible sections. That’s great for him, but maybe this exactly what the serious Christian is supposed to be doing. That is, writing his own book with favorite and important bible sections. By writing, a person has a greater degree of emotional and intellectual involvement than sitting in a Sunday lecture.
