Editorial Reviews

Review

“Working as an obituary writer could get you down, if you were the kind of person who let it. Lende isn’t…she teases wisdom from the lives her obits celebrate as well as from her own experiences as a mother and grandmother…each conveys the unsentimental conviction that the good in our lives shouldn’t be overshadowed by their inevitable end.” —New York Times Book Review
“A wise, witty memoir that combines anecdotes about Lende’s work and family with plainspoken wisdom gleaned from her years of living in a small community.” —Shelf Awareness for Readers, starred review
“Find the Good is the perfect nightstand accompaniment: short, breezy and chock-full of life lessons.” —New York Daily News

Find the Good is wonderful to its core . . . page after page of this delicious book is filled with truisms you’ll want framed to hang on your wall.” —The Oklahoman
“Simple yet profound… [Lende’s] homespun stories will speak meaningfully to readers. The overarching message is that the life we get is precious, as obituary writer Lende knows so well, and should be lived in such a way as to create much good to be remembered by.” —Booklist
“Honest and simple yet full of lasting strength, the author's prose demonstrates what makes a life better rather than worse—including something as simple as picking up heart-shaped stones on the beach with a grandchild. Optimistic, slightly humorous reflections on living a fully engaged, meaningful life.”—Kirkus Reviews
“It seems so easy to write something that makes the world a better place, but as most writers know, it isn’t. Heather Lende has a rare gift and is a writer to be treasured and appreciated for all the tough times in your life, whether you are from a small town in Southeast Alaska or a city on the other side of the world.”—The Seattle Review of Books
“At times heart-achingly poignant, at others heart-meltingly sweet, Find the Good reminds us those last words will come soon enough, far too soon for some, and charges us with the responsibility to not only live a life worth writing about but to recognize and honor those people who matter to us while they're here to appreciate it.”—South Bergenite/NorthJersey.com
“Lende’s short chapters resonate, reminding us that it’s worth looking at our relationships, our obligations, our priorities, our community, and our world from a fresh, positive perspective. A gift to share with friends and family, Find the Good offers a way out of the negativity and cynicism that can overwhelm our daily routines.”—Utne Reader
“A feel-good volume that is sure to please many a mom and maybe even earn you some extra brownie points.” —Bookbrowse

I have loved all of Heather's books as well as her blog, i.e I am a FAN!

I'm not a fan of Dillard or Lamott to whom Heather Lende is compared. I do not think that Heather Lende needs to be compared to anyone!! Heather Lende's essays/obituaries/blog posts are wonderful insights as well as inspirational thoughts for living life fully and in the present.

I keep one of Heather's books ...Now, this one...in my Kindle App as a daily devotional and a motivation to "Find the Good" in my own life.

Seriously good stuff here. At least for me.

From the bottom of my heart - Thank you, Heather.

I have followed Heathers writings since her first book. I wreaks of humanity in all forms. She puts a good spin on sometimes bad situations, and its fact like, translation is awesome. Her first book was I think the best "If you lived here I would know your name" But this book is true to form. A unique writter in a unique place.

What is it about a writer living in a VERY SMALL Alaska town that her prose grabs my heart and soul? Heather Lende's latest book does just that... every one of the pieces makes me stop and ponder (my) life. I couldn't read more than two at a sitting; to me, they are that powerful and thought-provoking.

I have read all of Lende's books since stumbling upon her works during a visit to the Haines Alaska library while on a one day pass from a cruise ship. I have loved every one of her books. I had anticipated that her literary magic woukd diminish but it has not. This one is simplh a gem. Even more than others, i pause after every other chapter to absorb the profound life wisdom portrayed. Lende writes from the heart, but with the keen eye of a woman who sees mich more than is on the surface. This is truly a 5 star gem!

This is a short, quick read. Warm, small town stories about finding the good in life. The messages are sincere, but common sense. Cultivate friendship. Get a dog. Exercise. Practice safety. Stay close to your family. Time flies by. Life is brief and beauriful. Life and illness are hard. Show up when needed. Work hard. Tell the ones you love how you feel. Look at the stars. Spend time in nature. Make your life matter. All of this is important, and Lende writes in a comfortable, easy style. The insights are earnest, some quirky, some lackluster. This is a pleasant, sparse book that serves as a reminder to appreciate life. A light, tepid read.

Heather continues her saga as an obituary writer in small-town Haines, Alaska. If you have read her first two books, this third installment is a must-read. Not only does the author provide insight into life in the Last Frontier, she does some deep soul-searching in this new volume, soul-searching that we should all consider from time to time. The only problem with this book is that it leaves the reader, or me anyway, already longing for another new installment. This book is well worth your time.

I had read Heather's two other books prior to this one, and was hooked on her style and wit when 'Find the Good' was published. Again, she has provided another read that proves difficult to lay aside until your finished.
My only disappoinment was the brevity of the work. It just so happened that my mother had passed away shortly before purchasing the book, so I found it helpful spiritually to experience stories of how others found peace during difficult times.

I loved Lende's previous two books, and this one also did not disappoint. It was honest and life-affirming, and I find her writing style pretty much perfect. This is not a book about small-town Alaska - rather it is a book about people and the human spirit. If you want to feel encouraged and motivated to move forward in a positive way in your own life, read this book. I promise you, you will not regret it.
