Find Me in California: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,870 ratings

An achingly romantic novel about chance meetings, buried secrets, and the multiple facets of love and family bonds by Wall Street Journal bestselling author Kerry Lonsdale.

Raised by her fiercely passionate and free-spirited grandmother, Julia Hope has never gone without love. But as she tends to her only living relative during her final days, Julia struggles to overcome her fear of being alone.

A thousand miles away, Matt Gatlin has managed to avoid the coldhearted grandmother with whom he once lived. But after twelve years of her being blessedly out of sight, she needs him. His resentments still raw, Matt packs up his car and reluctantly heads to California to confront a bitter past he thought was long gone.

Over the next six days, Julia’s and Matt’s fates intersect. An old diary exposes the tragedy of a long-lost love. A history of secrets in two families comes to light. And on a lonely back road, Matt picks up an unusual yet captivating hitchhiker with a secret of her own.

For Julia and Matt, something heartbreaking and heartwarming, mysterious and beautiful, will touch their lives—with neither of them realizing that maybe they’re destined for each other.

It’s heart-wrenching and heartwarming all at once. A story full of family secrets, loneliness, self-worth, love, loss, dealing with grief and estrangement…While the story is told through Matt and Julia’s POV over the course of 6 days, we also get to learn the connection between their grandmothers, Ruby Rose (Magnolia Blu) and Liza, and how the actions of two unlikely friends weaved a much larger web of secrets.I loved this journey and while there is drug use and other heavy subjects, I believe these were all written with deeper meaning and truly make this story pull your heart strings and emphasize the purpose of love and life.𝓛𝓲𝓯𝓮 𝓲𝓼𝓷’𝓽 𝔀𝓸𝓻𝓽𝓱 𝓵𝓲𝓿𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓲𝓯 𝔀𝓮 𝓭𝓸𝓷’𝓽 𝓪𝓵𝓵𝓸𝔀 𝓸𝓾𝓻𝓼𝓮𝓵𝓿𝓮𝓼 𝓽𝓸 𝓵𝓸𝓿𝓮. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓭 𝓲𝓯 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓵𝓸𝓿𝓮…🤫family secrets🔢multiple POV✌🏻dual timelines❓mystery🫶🏻romance🏡found family

Kerry Lonsdale, the author of “Find Me in California” has written a captivating and intriguing novel. The Genres for this novel are Family Life Fiction, Women’s Fiction, Domestic Fiction, Friendship and Fiction. In this well-written novel, the author vividly describes four characters with their own stories to tell, and weaves them into an emotional and memorable book. I appreciate how the author discusses important topics such as the importance of family, friendships, honesty, communication, forgiveness and second chances. The author also mentions the importance of self-worth, self-esteem, and taking an emotional journey to find oneself. Other important topics are dementia and Alzheimers, alcoholism, and drugs. I like the para-normal feel of certain situations in this novel.

Julia Hope and Matt Gatlin both have aging grandmothers in an assisted living home. Julia has always been loved by her grandmother, and Matt has been ignored by his grandmother. Both were brought up by their grandmothers. Currently both grandmothers are in the same assisted living residence, and seem to have secrets. Julia and Matt are not aware that both grandmothers knew each other. Julia is a volunteer at the facility and has sent Matt boxes from his grandmother. Matt has been contacted by the facility to come and take care of financial arrangements for his grandmother. Julia works at several jobs to help keep her grandmother at the facility. Matt leaves to go to California to take care of this, and has several detours on his way.

Julia finds an old diary that sheds light on many situations. I loved everything about this story and highly recommend this to other readers.

Won this book as a Goodreads Giveaway. Always loved a Lonsdale book and this one did not disappoint. Very heartbreaking when two people have issues with family but we also see how they deal with it in each their own way. Both Julia and Matt grew up feeling unloved but what brings them together is something they never would have imagined.

A heartwarming, beautiful and memorable story by an author I always enjoy reading.

Once again, Kerry Lonsdale has written a story that will stay with me a long, long time. She weaves a great storyline with memorable characters that takes me to a place and time I never want to leave. As always, I devoured this story but then was a little sad that it was over. I need to learn to pace myself, but it's impossible with her books.

Matt and Julia are thrown together as they each deal with their elderly grandmothers, each facing their last days in the nursing home before they are kicked out. Little did they, or we as the readers, know how intertwined their lives would become or how much of a past they shared. Be prepared to unravel a lot of stuff!

I loved the dual timelines as we watch how Matt and Julia get themselves out of the predicaments they find themselves in, but also as we learn how the past got them to this point. Maybe there really is something magical and 'meant-to-be' in that whole destiny thing.

Find Me in California is another book by Ms. Lonsdale that blew me out of the water. I loved everything about it. She does an amazing job of storytelling and I thoroughly enjoy all of her stories. This one is one of her best! I highly recommend it.

A very confusing story with so many characters. And jumping back and forth between families and times was often very confusing. It was good to get to the end and see that some things did turn out well.

This was an old fashioned tear jerker of a book from the beginning. Losing you mom and at 10 years old is hard but to be sent clear across the country Florida to California was a shock. His grandmother was nothing like his warm loving life parents. Thus he grew up without love.
Enjoy

So well written. I loved how she was able to write about Matt’s “hallucinations”. Plus give it meaning and life lessons. Losing someone is never easy, and the book gives you hope with dealing with grief. The characters are so interesting.

Having read 4 of Kerry Lonsdale's books (and having enjoyed them all) I was happy to see that she had a new one coming out. And I'm glad to say that I enjoyed this one as well. There's a lot going on here - it centers on two women living in an assisted living facility, nearing the end of their lives. One has a beloved granddaughter who lives nearby and is doing all she can to keep a promise she'd made to let her grandmother live out her days in the facility. The other is trying to contact the estranged grandson whom she hasn't seen in years. What follows is a story of love and betrayal and heartbreak and grief and hope and second chances, and the importance of family, both blood and chosen. Yep, lots of the feels here. There are also a couple of interesting "WTF did I just read??" scenes - excellent incentive to just say no to drugs. Lonsdale tells the story with heart and touches of humor. It's a good reminder that I need to move those books she's written that I haven't yet read up on my TBR list.
