"The pages all but turn themselves as the story unfolds in taut chapters alternating between Rosa's journal entries and Jar's frantic quest. Monroe adds more voices in the book's second half, keeping the guess-who's-crazy/guilty ball in the air until the all-consuming reveal. Pacing is crisp and the plot is credible, but it's the cast of expertly crafted, psychologically ambiguous characters that rivets."-Publisher Weekly, starred review
"Monroe's debut thriller is a paranoiac's dream with plenty of twists. [A]n exciting read that combines the thrill of a spy novel and the intimacy of a coming-of-age tale. Fast-paced, satisfying, and, ultimately, life-affirming."-Kirkus Reviews

When Amy “discovers” a heavily encrypted copy of what purports to be a diary that her niece had put on the hard-drive of a computer just before disappearing, she turns this over to Jar for decoding, at which point the plot thickens. Not only Carl, but a “failed journalist” named Max, are enlisted by Jar to help him decode and research the validity of this highly questionable diary, and eventually unravel the whole plot, which turns out to be not at all what any of them (or the police) had originally perceived it to be.
This story is one which seems to sort of bumble along at the beginning, with confusion and misdirection abounding, but when you get to Part Two, it begins to develop the momentum of a snowball rolling downhill. At this point the narrative switches rapidly back-and-forth between journal entries by Martin, passages from Rosa’s purported early diary, and descriptions of the actions of Jar as he tries to verify the validity of the material Amy has given him, surfs the Dark Web, and attempts to escape a sinister pursuer while still searching for Rosa. Also included are italicized fragments of Rosa’s “real” journal, which become more and more explicit concerning what is actually happening in the present.
The value of this book, besides being a very engaging story, is the way in which it deals with the ethics of biomedical research and the interface of drug use with espionage, including the torture of prisoners. As is true of many contemporary novels, “Find Me” relies heavily on technology, including the manipulation of the Internet, smart phone capabilities, and computer hacking.
Jar's girlfriend Rosa supposedly committed suicide 5 years earlier. However, he suddenly catches a glimpse of her in a train station, and off we go into a rabbit hole of a thriller.
The main characters are strongly depicted, with Jar and his girlfriend the most powerfully described, as it is their love which drives this thriller forward.
There are some good twists and some nerve-wracking scenes which are not for the squeamish.
It is a bit like a Hitchcock film (if Hitchcock wrote novels), only one grade down.
Jar and Rosa were in love with each other, that is until the night when Rosa died. Even though it was classed as an accident, Jar doesn't believe that the woman who held his heart would just be gone with nothing more than a small accident. When he receives a email appearing from Rosa, he starts to think that maybe he was right and that she still is alive, but in doing so it also brings about the questions. If she is still alive, why didn't she come looking for him? Or better yet, why did she run away in the first place, claiming to be dead?
From reading this story, I admire Jar's character so much, you can truly see how much he loves Rosa and that he believes she is still out there somewhere. I liked the element of not knowing what would happen next, it is something I find keeps you enthralled in the story and pushes you to read as much as you can in one sitting.
I know at this point most people would say that their favourite character would be Jar as he is the realistic choice, but I am going to be different and choose Rosa. Her character is one of strength, unpredictable and truly life changing in the sense that it is her story being told not just through her but through Jar and how he sees her as a person and not just the love of his life.
Find Me is a captivating book that will have you itching to find out the ending and will surprise you throughout the book with the secrets that get revealed. J.S. Monroe has done a brilliant job of writing characters that fit perfectly together and make this story such an enjoyable read that everyone who likes mystery will love.
Captivating, Powerful and Thrilling.
