Wick's life has been more of a nightmare than a dream. So she has a hard time adjusting to a "normal life" and foster parents who really seem to care about her. Wick's father is a felon and he has been abusive to Wick and her sister, Lily. Her father is currently on the run from the law, but they live in fear that he will return.
Wick is an excellent hacker and earns extra money by finding information for women who are having trouble in their relationships. Of course, this isn't legal but Wick feels like she needs the money in case she ever has to take Lily and run. Wick doesn't like to have to depend on anyone else for anything.
Detective Carson is searching for Wick's father and is keeping Wick under surveillance. Wick is sure Carson is a bad cop and that he is out to get her.
Wick has a lot of things on her plate and she doesn't know who to trust. The last thing she needs is to get mixed up in Tessa's death. But whoever abused Tessa has threatened to move on to Lily next. And Wick can't let anyone hurt Lily.
This was a good thriller. Wick is a prickly character but with good reason. She doesn't like to let people get close. I enjoyed watching her relationship with Griff evolve. Is he a good guy? I was pretty sure he was but so many people in this story aren't what they seem to be. I enjoyed trying to figure out who was the bad guy from Tessa's diary. And the reveal was exciting and satisfying.
This book is written for teens, but adults can enjoy it too. If you like thrillers, I think you will enjoy this novel. I read the physical book for this one and I will be passing it on to a friend who I know loves reading young adult novels as much as I do. :)
Find Me is a new thrilling young adult book by debut author Romily Bernard. When I first heard about this book I was really excited to get my hands on it. I love thrillers, mysteries and suspense filled books that keep me guessing at every new twist & turn. Find Me is exactly that and did not let down!
Romily Bernard introduces us to a strong female protagonist named Wick. She has had a troubled past. Growing up with a criminal father in a bad neighborhood, Wick learned quickly how to survive her world and to protect her sister. I really loved Wick. She has to be one of my all time favorite female characters. She is smart, guarded and very protective over her sister.
The story kicks off with Wick and Lilly (her sister) in a foster home. Even though they left their troubled past behind them and things are actually looking good for them, Wick is still constantly guarded and always looking out for the bad. She even has a little “illegal” computer hacking business to make money for when eventually her and Lilly will need to make a break for it. Trouble does find it’s way back into Wick’s life in the form of a journal of her ex best friend that ends up on her front porch.
A big aspect of this book was computer hacking which I loved! Wick is a computer hacker and solves the big mystery that way. Romily Bernard does not over complicate it for us, which computer hacking can sometimes be. Instead everything is easy to understand but still adds to the suspense! This makes the book edgy and stands out among other young adult books.
My favorite thing to do when I read a murder mystery/thriller is to try to guess who the bad guy is or try to figure out the outcome of the story. With Find Me I was always picking one person then another. First it looked like it’s that guy for sure! Then a few chapters later you have someone else lined up. I was always second guessing my theories as I went along with the story. The ending is quite shocking and I wasn’t expecting it at all!
Find Me by Romily Bernard is one of my top favorite books I read this year. It is very enthralling with an unexpected outcome. I am really excited this is a series with two sequels already planned. I can’t wait to see what Wick comes across next! This was a great read!
A bit of disclosure. Though I purchased the book, I am acquainted with the author. I don't read much YA, but I enjoy suspense and found the premise (below) fascinating.
Wicket Tate has a screwed-up life. Bouncing around foster homes with her kid sister, owing to her mother's suicide and her dad's felon status, Wicket stays sane by hacking computers for women seeking information on their husbands and boyfriends. The work is illegal, but she justifies it, saying that the money she makes will be there to take care of her and her sister. This is a heroine whose life can't get worse. Until the diary of a dead girl shows up on her porch and Wicket realizes a psychopath is after her sister.
Like I said, I found the premise fascinating. I cracked the book on a Friday evening, sneaking in a couple of chapters prior to my younger son's baseball game. The author's blunt, emotional writing style, and the quick pace from the short chapters, drew me in. Through the weekend, I devoured more pages between more athletic contests and band events on Saturday. By Sunday afternoon, I was anticipating the end so much that I muttered under my breath when my wife pointed out that the nice weather made it a good time to trim hedges and mow the lawn. (Married readers of this review will understand why I put the book down.) With yard work done, I plopped on the couch, determined to finish without interruption.
The ending didn't disappoint. Neither did the book. It was a fantastic read.
