As with “Because Of Lucy”, I believe that this is not just a rehash of the original novella, but is a full-bodied re-build. In “Finding Evan”, however, I struggled with Ness and her new supercilious exclusive “medical school” friends – Ollie and Jared. Ollie especially, who at first, seemed to make Ness question her relationship with Evan, and with Ness who let her insecurities get the better of her, even as she and Evan struggle with her new intense med school timetable. She has also had a gutsful of Lucy who again makes new demands of Evan even though he is trying to encourage her independence.
“Because Of Lucy” has to have been read before carrying on with “Finding Evan”, so we know about the Mental Health issues surrounding Evan’s twin sister, Lucy. What Lisa communicates in this book is that this isn’t just about the affected family member, but the immediate family, then the relationships surrounding the extended family – like ripples on a pond, the repercussions reverberate outwards.
What is evident with this young couple is the depth of love, and even though they struggle overcoming a lifetime of learned behaviour and their own family dynamics, they are trying to learn to communicate and grow together. Sometimes, however, habits return and some events are just too hard to overcome.
I award 5 very definite heartfelt stars to Lisa Swallow for “Finding Evan” and highly recommend this book to anyone who loves books of this genre.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
In my opinion, Lisa Swallow is a very unique writer. She uses situations that could really happen in real life to create her stories. I really feel like I am living the story with the characters. This puts off the feeling that the author is able to immerse herself into other people’s lives and write from a point of view as if she lived the situations herself. Or maybe she is using her own life as a source to get material. Either way, she uses her words to bring light to situations that most people don’t want to think about. Some people want to escape into worlds that are so unlike their own that they can lose themselves. I like to do that sometimes myself, but I think that there should be something said about an author who can use real life instances and convince a reader that they are living in the same world.
The plot in Finding Evan is similar to the plot in Because of Lucy if you look at the big picture.Read more ›
It's always tricky reading a second book in any genre other than paranormal, for me. It's hard to know if the intensity and content is still going to be enough to fill another book with the same characters, or whether it's going to fizzle out and spoil the memory of the first book. This was not something I needed to worry about with Finding Evan.
The book leads straight off from the end of summer where Ness and Evan have been traveling around Europe together. Ness is now also enrolled at Uni to do medicine and straight away I can see where some problems may lie in wait for the two of them. It has quite a fast paced speed to it right from the start and I didn't find myself page skimming or getting distracted at all.
There is a couple of new characters introduced in this book which spices up the storyline and causes a few problems for Ness and Evan. One of the new characters (Ollie) is fantastic and I would of loved to know more of his story, lots of secrets and brooding sexiness. Unfortunately it wasn't his story so I'll have to just wonder about him wistfully.
Of course after reading Because Of Lucy, a key factor of the first book is Lucy herself and a big question is whether she will be another onslaught of problems in this book, answer to that question is yes, she returns with a fresh set of problems for poor Evan and Ness.
I constantly spent my time backing either Ness or Evan. One minute in his corner then swinging to hers.Read more ›
