Jedda Wright has been in prison for most of his life. He has never lived as an adult outside of the system. When asked to envision a safe place the only thing that comes to mind is his prison cell. He has fears, doubts, and more people betting on his failure than his success. But as we all know from previous books in this series that if you have Betty on your side, that is really all you need.
I loved Jedda’s character. I loved that he was vulnerable but tough. I loved that no matter how hard things became he was so willing to try. His devotion to his sister was amazing and his willingness to let her go showed the true depth of his selfless nature.
Speaking of Willow. She was another twist in the story that I really enjoyed. To see her acknowledge her emotional baggage and how it manifests in her life was very interesting. I am a firm believer that a person has no chance of growing until they look their issues in the face and accepts their existence. I look forward to hearing more of Willow's story and seeing how she develops in the next book in the series, Settling Scores, expected release date in May 2014.
As with all of the books in this fantastic series the “gang” bands together and helps the newcomer(s) to their group overcome the danger that has followed them to Edenville and supports them as they come to terms with their past and make a new way for their future. Finding Freedom, ends with Jedda's story finding some resolution and with Willow's story beginning.
I have read, and loved, all of the books in this series. I do think you could read this book as a stand-alone and still get a feel for the history of this group of characters. However, I suggest starting from the beginning with book 1, Chasing Justice. You will learn so much more if you do.

Danielle has the unique talent of being able to bring her stories and characters to life. She is a master at this. She nails it with every single book by making me feel like she knows MY life story, MY emotions/feelings/actions...what MY life experience has been...she captures ME. Always has connected me personally to her characters.
With Finding Freedom, I was especially struck by how often I would contemplate and reflect upon what was transpiring in the story. Why?? As I read some select parts (or else I would have read in its entirety) of this book to a very wise woman, she told me the reason I felt this way is because MANY of us have had or are going through these same emotions/feelings...it's what makes this so incredible...Danielle truly connects us.
I love how Jedda transforms and gains an understanding of himself in this book. Do I think his story is done? Heck no. He has some serious emotional issues that need addressing as does Willow, but knowing there is a strong support system of Betty, Clay, Bobby, Piper, Michael, Jules and Crystal will help.
This is another aspect of Finding Freedom that I loved. Danielle didn't shy away from bringing attention to real life medical issues such as PTSD, panic attacks, anxiety and depression, just like diabetes is a real medical illness. These were once taboo illnesses not to be discussed. I hope her doing so helps others realize these are real, there is treatment available and there is no reason for shame.
Danielle no wonder you have my heart. Each book you write is not only therapeutic to me but makes me feel HOME.
I can't wait to visit with my "family" again. Until then...I highly recommend this book to all. You will not be disappointed that's for sure.
