- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2024I first saw "Finding Graceland" on HBO not long after it was released in 1998. Priscilla Presley had to approve the script. She liked it so much she became an Executive Producer. Johnathon Schaech plays Byron who is taking a solo road trip to Memphis. He picks up a hitch hiker played by Harvey Keitel who says he is Elvis Presley. He asks Byron if will give him a ride to Elvis's home Graceland. Bridget Fonda has a featured role as Ashley who is a Marilyn Monroe Impersonater. I found this to be an entertaining flick.
I have been a fan of Elvis since the '70's. I have 40 of his albums on vinyl and some CD's. And some DVD's. Took a 500 mile road trip to Graceland back in 1996 with Mom, my sister Teresa and her husband Dennis. Took the complete 5 hour tour. One of the highlights of my life. The taglines for some of the movie posters read..... "Even a king needs a lift now and then" And , "Life isn't about believing in dreams....it's about living them"

5.0 out of 5 stars Harvey Keitel looks nothing like Elvis! But I was pleasantly surprised at how ...
I have been a life long fan of Elvis so was very leery about this movie. Face it, Harvey Keitel looks nothing like Elvis! But I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the story and the performances. It kind of made fun of the fact that this guy thought he was Elvis, but then weird things happen that make you wonder if he's delusional after all... Maybe... just maybe...

- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2015The DVD was high resolution and made enjoying this movie even better. The movie itself is a bit corny...the first time you watch it. But Keitel's "Elvis" will have you replaying that bit more than once. If you're like me, it will bring you back to watch the whole thing every once in a while, just to see the detail. A well executed story despite the shallow performance by Fonda (since Henry died, we're stuck with the shallow end of that gene pool) and the overacting by Schaech. Keitel saves this movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2015Back in 1997 my husband [who is a big Elvis fan] and I made the pilgrimage to Graceland. We arrived after dark and were going to go by Graceland but the street was blocked off and there was a huge crowd of people, vehicles, etc. I asked at the hotel we were staying at what was going on and was told that a movie was being filmed, called "Finding Graceland". So naturally when it came out in '98 we had to get it just out of curiosity.
It's hard to describe this movie. Harvey doesn't look like Elvis, it's true. And all through the movie I kept thinking, it would be easy to prove whether he's really Elvis, just compare his fingerprints, DNA [although back at that time DNA wasn't around that much maybe]. But the point to me wasn't whether he looked like Elvis, or even if he really was Elvis. It was about people living under illusions and dealing with tragedy where logic has little or no bearing.
Although there were parts that I thought bordered on the ridiculous, on the whole I enjoyed the movie, enough to buy the DVD. Partly because seeing Graceland reminds me of our time there, but also to watch it again.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2022I thought this would be another Elvis is alive! type movie, but it wasn't. Really thoughtful plot.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2016Well, this is a little sweet movie about a man (Harvey Keitel) who thinks (or at least pretends) that he is Elvis Presly.
He hitchhikes to Johnathon Schaech's car who's wife just died because of a car accident.
First, Johnathon didn't liked him. Harvey doesn't have money and he kept asking this and that. Also his being as Elvis bothered him too.
But more they got together and finally Johnathon seeing Hervey singing Elvis' song, he fells in love with his behavior.
They really understand Hervey.
The special thing about Harvey was he knows all the details about Elvis, even a small things that a single people can never know.
There is this woman who actually knew Elvis talks with Harvey and found out that Harvey even knows some kind of secret code that only Elvis knows.
At that time, it was kind of magic. Maybe he was resurrected as Elvis from heaven?
The movie has nothing big story but was quite charming.
Harvey Keitel and Johnathon Schaech and the Bridget Fonda were all beautiful and nicely acted.
Hervey as Elvis was not perfect. He was even shaking like a virgin when he is about to sing in the stage. That is even more beaufitul.
Have you ever seen an amateur actor tries to have an audition before and really trembles like a coward?
i personally think that is kind of beautiful. Sometimes that moment is a bridge to make him/her do the magical performance.
If that actor is so good at acting he/she will just do the acting like a robot not even feel that he/she is doing what he/she is doing because he/she is so good at it.
When Harvey is about to leave, he made the almost broken Johnathon's car fixed, that was a very beautiful moment too. The one who fixed the car was a great fan of Harvey and he did it for Elvis (I mean Harvey. Who cares. For that guy, Harvey is the Elvis).
This is not an instant classic. But is the movie you can enjoy.

Dr. R. MemonReviewed in the United Kingdom on May 13, 20125.0 out of 5 stars the struggle to find peace, meaning and purpose to our lives
this film works on many levels. the one that resonates most for me is the universal struggle to find peace, meaning and purpose in life. how much change can a day make in our lives? the answer is quite a lot.
the elvis character appears to be living in a fantasy world, possibly as a way of escaping his own inner demons. the marilyn character instead wears her mask just a few months of the year as a way of making some money. the film suggests to me the hollowness of idol worship. the central character of byron is stuck in the bitter grief of his own tragedy following his wife's death. but through his experiences on this road trip he finds hope, healing and the possibility of a new future. the bitterness and cynicism he seemed to be trapped in are processed and he can move on from this to a more positive life.
there is something bigger and beyond ourselves that people seem to be searching for. some would call it spirituality. all of us in our own way are looking for guidance and trying to find graceland.
the end credits say the film was dedicated to carl faber. for those interested in these deeper questions his own ideas can be found on the net.
