The story follows Julian, a man who had all of the things a person could want in life - money, power, the love of a good woman - and he took it all for granted. After waking up from a coma, he realized that life went on without him... and became better for some of the people he loves. Single and heartbroken after the death of his mother and the end of his relationship, Julian heads to a cabin to get away from it all... only someone else had the same idea. Keaton lost the love of her life to cancer, and she’s grieving just as much as Julian. These two are different in so many ways, but find a connection in their heartache, and possibly a love that is stronger because of their losses.
It’s an incredibly moving book, and Rachel Van Dyken’s writing skill is showcased in a big way - there are some light and playful moments, some tenderness, some gut-wrenching angst, and a romance that develops over time. The first half is just so, so good - I love it when strangers meet and find an unexpected connection, so it really worked for me. I didn’t love the second half as much, only because the push/pull overtook the romance a bit, but I loved the emotion that was prevalent in that half. Fair warning that this talks about death, cancer, love, and loss in depth with scenes that may move you to tears. This series has been some of my favorite work from Van Dyken, and I’m ecstatic that Finding Him managed to be such a solid followup to the fantastic Stealing Her. I received an ARC via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review of this emotional romance.
Finding Him by Rachel Van Dyken is a book that will pull at your heartstrings and have you at the edge of your seat! If you're a lover of Rachel Van Dyken like I am, you will adore this book, but will notice that the quick banter and humor that you have come to love is missing in most of this book and replaced with angst, longing, and maybe a few tears instead. Two broken souls are pushed together in Finding Him and she gives us a beautiful love story that I was unable to put down! Julian and Keaton find themselves stranded in a blizzard together, and both of them just wanted to be alone, to deal with their grief, and try to find solace, but instead they found solace in one another and helped each other battle their demons and find strength in one another and themselves once again. Keaton is trying to write the love story of her first love, Noah, who passed away of cancer, and trying to work through everything she's been through and Julian is dealing with the loss of his mother, trying to come to terms with his brother now being married to his ex-fiancè, and trying to figure out who he is after his accident and being in a coma. Both of them are dealing with so much grief, and being around one another they really help each other work through it, and build a friendship and a beautiful romance even though it was the last thing either of them was looking for it, but once they get out of the cabin, and reality hits, things change and they have to figure out if it was just the solitude of being alone that made things the way they were, or if the connection they had was real. Reality is nasty for Keaton and what the public expects from her, and Julian has never felt the way he has before except for when he's with Keaton but he knows the decision has to be hers.Their story is rough, angsty, sad, and yet so beautiful. I loved watching these two learn to trust one another, build a relationship, and slowly fall in love with each other. This was a slow burn romance that had me on the edge of my seat, and I truly enjoyed every single second of it, even if at times I wanted to strangle Keaton with some of her antics and being afraid. If you're a lover of angsty romance and aren't afraid of a few tears, please one-click your copy today!
