I'll admit, I had no idea what to expect from this book. Garrett Leigh writing young adult? Why did I even doubt? Wow, this was a really powerful story. I loved it...a lot.
Okay, so the book starts with Leo's incredibly tragic experience as he tries to shield his six year old sister from his abusive father right before he kills their mother...in front of them. Neither Leo or Lily has been left unscathed, but at 15, Leo is definitely not in a good place. He doesn't trust anyone. For so many years, it's just been him protecting himself and his sister.
Then there's Charlie. Charlie was adopted into this foster family at the age of two. He understands the rules and how things work in this household. He slowly guides Leo in settling in, but not even Charlie can keep everything smooth as Leo needs it.
It was a great book. From page one the story was completely engaging...much more than I usually find young adult stories. I wanted to cheer each tiny victory for Leo, even when the next pages I cringed because he's so young and so damaged and making so many mistakes. I wanted to take him into my arms and protect him from this world that should have protected him to begin with.
I loved this book and most definitely recommend it for both young adult and adult readers alike! It was a fantastic story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Leo has had one hell of a bad life and he’s got his sister Lila to take care of. When they get taken in by Charlie’s family, Leo can’t get comfortable enough to let them help. Leo and Charlie grow closer and Leo starts to trust him, but when things go down hill and Leo does something he regrets, and he runs. It’s takes the whole family working together to try and save Leo, but Charlie is the only one who can really bring Leo into the light.
I shed many tears on Leo’s behalf and I whole heartedly recommend this book, Garrett Leigh is a bloody genius!
Very highly recommended.

Warning tho' it is most definitely a romance I found it a very emotional read. Which took me by surprise.
