What I love most about Siobhan's work is the impossible situations in which she puts her characters. The binds she puts them in--there's no way out except for extreme pain or authors' tricks. I do hope she goes the pain way because tricks would be too easy. I'm waiting with bated breath to find out. I have faith that she'll do the right thing.
I must say that I didn't like the characters at first. Despite the hardships that justifiably made them hostile and snarky, I found it hard to feel sympathy, especially for Faye's drunken friends. They certainly weren't people I would want to spend time around. But then about a third of the way through something happened. I found that I couldn't put the book down and that could only mean one thing: I had begun to feel invested in them. Once that happened I positively raced to the end, sneaking peeks in between other activities just so I could see what was going to develop.
I have read all of the author's Saven books except for the one she hasn't yet published. I love them, but I found that I was frustrated by some of the YA limitations placed on the characters. Ahem. I think you know what I mean. There were no such limits in this book. All the sex scenes in both series are hot, but the ones in this book are hotter for just that reason. The different "rules" of the game in Kyler allow her to write smoldering, truly satisfying sex scenes, which she does with consummate skill. I am not an erotica reader but I think if Siobhan were writing it I would be.
So, four stars only because it took me so long to warm to the characters, but for the emotional satisfaction and the thrill of the story, five+. (Gawd, I hate ratings though. They're so dumb.)
Once again, I am sucker for free books. I feel like that is the opening to a lot of my reviews. Anyway, I got Finding Kyler for free, yay! I knew there was going to be a taboo relationship and I was ok. In fact, I wanted to see how it would develop.
So we meet Feya in Ireland. She has just found out that she has an uncle and since her parents have passed, she is to live with the uncle as she is still a minor. Little did she know that her uncle had married into a fashionable clothing brand and he is filthy rich. Feya travels to the US to live with her uncle and his family. He has 7 boys - that's a lot of cousins. Immediately, Feya is drawn to Kyler, in my mind he looks something like Theo James - because when in doubt, imagine Theo James. Kyler is not a very nice person and they have a little battle of wills.
We learn that the Kennedy house is a mess. The boys are all in different levels of trouble and so are the parents. We also get to deal with the rich and the poor side of this neighborhood. People are bad, for badness sake (Addison, her cousin, and Courtney). People are trying to fit in this world and make bad choices. And, I'm not sure how this place can sustain a private school and a regular HS. But, who cares, because every time Kyler and Faye are together the electricity is just very real.
The cliffhanger in this book is just crazy and I almost went into the next book, which is not something I do.
One major warning: there is a mind-blowing cliffhanger. I hate them. If you do to then here is a way to avoid its impact. At the end of the book when Faye and Kyler decide whether or not to go public with their feelings about each other (and, no, I won't tell you what they decide) stop as soon as you learn their decision. That way you can avoid the cliffhanger entirely. I wish I'd known that in advance. I'd still want the next book - but I'd hold off reading that last couple of pages until starting book 2.
