"Finding Moana" could have been called "Finding Polynesia." The book draws deeply, and successfully, from a well of rich Polynesian mythology and history. James Halemanu unapologetically forces the reader to reference an included glossary of Hawaiian language words. I found that learning the new words opened up a whole new vista in my mind's eye--a world vastly different than the Tolken-esque fantasies that we have become familiar with. The result was a fresh and intriguing new perspective!
Halemanu's plot is definitely NOT "Snow White" set in Polynesia! Furthermore, this book is not sweet dessert. From the very first scene, the reader is thrust into a violent clash of magic, ancient enemies, and death. It was not easy to pull away from this truly unique plot. I had to keep reading until the final scene. I haven't read a book like this since I first read "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" by CS Lewis, as a kid!
If you are craving serious protein, this is it...served thick and rare!
I can say if you're looking for a decent book to kill time, whether your flying, or just looking to lose yourself in a good story, this is an excellent find. Kudo's to the author.
I also have to admit, that I am an individual that loves cheering on the underdog, the fact this story originated from an adapted version of a bed time story is something that I can truly respect. There are some books that I have purchased from big time authors, and wondered to myself, “why did I just spend ten bucks to read this” whereas this book made me ask, how did I get off spending so little? I should have been charged ten bucks at least.
Overall this was a really good adventure book, that I would recommend for any younger kid who enjoys books based on adventure. I would even go as far as to say this is a book that I would purchase for my mother who isn’t really a big adventure book person, I have a feeling she would enjoy reading this. I personally will be purchasing a few copies for my nephews to read and possible for a few other close friends.
