I didn't know that this was the 3rd book of a series and unlike most of the other reviewers, I felt that it would have been beneficial to have read the first 2 prior to Finding Nina. The 3 main characters were OK but I found it hard to believe Nina and Sammy's characters and I could have used more information on Ray. I really didn't see the connection of why Sammy disliked Ray enough to do what he did. The ending left me empty. I think there should have been more, unless it's coming in another novel.
I had a hard time getting into this book and an equally difficult finishing it.
the book summary is a little skewered with the last line but the book was wonderful. I was hoping Ray though would have a better ending. I understand why that occurred but still wanted him to come out on top and overcome everything. Oh well.
so Ray Sanchez is a ex-cop who is down on his luck. Not in the alcohol, drug addiction way but in the I have lost all that I hold dear to me way and I did stupid things and am now in a pickle way. He's a good cop although a little jagged and has a chip on the shoulder. Again can't blame him but do feel for him. While in lockup he does a bonehead thing, which he freely admits to, and runs his mouth. He chats stupidly about his ex Nina Kelly. I think he does this because of the bitter ending their relationship took. I mean he still loves her and I think she loves him too but it ended and he had no idea why. So he gets bitter especially after she marries and for some reason feels the need to chat. But chats to the wrong guy.
a guy who knows Nina and has a secret thing for her even if he doesn't want to admit it. Sammy is a thief, con artist you name it. But he wants a new life. So much so that he does some pretty stupid things to try to obtain it. Only problem is he has some blinders on and wants revenge against Ray. Why? Because Ray told him to leave Nina alone. This prompts Sammy to take action. Action that is not a good thing.
Sammy is generally a laid back guy. A thief still but not a mean I am going to hurt you thief. He only gets angry when Ray tries to stop him. This prompts him to leave his comfort zone and go into kidnapping. Kidnap the one Ray loves but no longer has. The ordeal will have you wonder how Sammy every made it as a thief. When he does something unexpected and kind he should have left but he couldn't. Why? Blinders from wanting to get Ray. This causes him to go beyound the line into killing.
Will Ray and Nina get together? Will Sammy be caught? All valid questions that is poignant and keeps you on your seat mystery will answer. A great mystery book that you will not put down until done.
All the characters have shades of grey, all make mistakes and fumble along, and there is a happy ending.
BUT I found various errors: raison instead of raisin, stationary instead of stationery, opening quotation marks missing, opening single quote used instead of apostrophe (e.g. 'cause), etc.
