I am the biggest fan of the M/M genre and I loved this book! This was different than any other book in the genre that I have read thus far. In Finding North, you will personally witness a man struggling to come to terms with his sexual identity in a town that is non too quiet about their total animosity toward the gay community. Carmen Jenner sure knows how to evoke such strong emotions in the reader and she makes it impossible to not fall in love with her characters.
Will Tanner and North Underwood have been best friends since kindergarten. When they fell into bed with one another ten years ago, it changed everything. Will had always had a secret crush for his friend, but North had thought himself straight up to this point. They were inseparable, but people grow apart and hearts will break.
Ten years later and their attraction for one another is still just as strong but Will will never forget how North shattered his heart and threw all their years of friendship away. Alcohol and bad decisions lead these two down the exact same path that destroyed their friendship all those years ago. Will can't help but to fall in love with North all over again, but will things be different this time? Or will Will's life get shattered all over again?
I absolutely loved this heart wrenching emotional read and may have even shed a tear or two through the struggles these two men go through. The only problem I had was that this book alternates between past and present but the author doesn't clearly state how old the characters are. Throughout the whole book, I was confused as to when the events were happening. In one chapter the characters are in their teens and in the next they are at the bar drinking away their problems. It was just slightly confusing for me, but doesn't really take away from the bigger picture and what is going on. I really look forward to reading more from this author.
Will Tanner and North Underwood have been best friends for forever. One night and a period of time changed all that and sometimes what you do to protect someone you love ruins everything and destroys other people's hearts.
Red Maine is a small town full of people who are closed minded and just down right cruel. Will however is Will and he's not changing just because people think he should. North however is scared and confused. Though in his heart though he knows what he wants. What truly makes him happy. Can North find the courage he needs to take control of his life? Will will be there when he does?
Oh my goodness I'd give this book a million stars if I could. I honestly went in to this book expecting it to be like other m/m books I have read in the past. What I got was so much more. A truly emotional journey is what I got. A beautiful, heartbreaking, breathtaking journey to happiness. It really pulls you in and breaks your heart and makes you realize that no matter how open minded the world seems it really truly isn't. People shouldn't have to fight so hard to be who you are and accepted for that. Love is love and no matter your opinion on the matter it's not our place to judge or belittle people who are different than what some think is normal. Life shouldn't be so hard to just find your true north and be happy.
Carmen Jenner's books are always amazing. I read them every time she has a new release. That said, Finding North has got to be one of the most heart felt, emotional, eye opening books she's ever written. I trusty adore the way this book was written and how I could feel in my heart and soul how this mattered to her. This book has the potential to open hearts, minds, and souls. As someone that this subject matters to greatly because of someone I love more than anything in the world, I'm greatful to Carmen Jenner for opening her heart and pouring it all out in the pages of Finding North. I truly hope everyone reads this book and opens their minds to just exactly how difficult life for some people in this world is and how it doesn't have to be
"...thousand memories of our childhood come flooding back— It took only a second to break both our hearts."
I have to admit, the further along you get into this 'Romeo and Romeo' gay tale of forced unrequited love, the more your heart opens to these two broken individuals who are clearly meant for one another.
"This is how a father is supposed to behave; they hug you when you’re hurting, and they want to take away the pain, not inflict it."
There are some powerful moments that truly reflects, who and how someone can be deemed a good or bad parent and sometimes it doesn't matter which you are, because your child can still end up facing darkness.
“Let’s go make you happy.”
