The Chalky Sea – Another well written, interesting story by Ms. Flynn. Set in England during WW2 with Canadian and British characters that are well developed for their roles, Ms. Flynn weaves an interesting, suspenseful, intriguing story of their lives. The emotions run the gamut from happiness to despair. The dialog is realistic, the characters believable and the plot well thought out.
Some of the characters grow from their experiences and the reader feels a part of the community as the story unfolds. The author does a great job with her descriptions. This book reminded me of Binchy and Pilcher and Buck, and I would set Flynn’s books on the shelves with theirs.
A Mother's Love - Heart wrenching. A wonderful, sad, well written short story set in 1793 England. A late in life child and a loving mother and what she does for him. This short story can be found in A Fine Pair of Shoes. I received this short story from the author when I contacted her to review her books.
In the last two chapters, Flynn shares with us the first two chapters of her upcoming novel, The Chalky Sea. My review for that powerful story will come soon.
Overall I have rated this collection of art four stars while giving a few of them a three-star rating. The overall presentation of the book was superbly done starting with the book cover and title. I hope to see more short-stories like this from the author and look forward to reading The Chalky Sea!

A delightful book of short stories by Clare Flynn.
I especially liked 'The Sound of Silence,' which is a subtle and beautiful story about a woman's move from the City to a remote area and her reaction to her new environment.
And 'Survival' which is a hilarious story set in America about a dysfunctional relationship.
I also enjoyed 'A Mother's Love', a poignant story and 'No Crime on the Island', very relevant today.
Well worth a read for short story lovers.
