Editorial Reviews

Review

''Mark Levine does his homework, and even better, shares it. With meticulous research and easy-to-follow charts, Levine compares the prices and options for various publishing pathways. Expanding on earlier editions, he walks writers through the DIY process with CreateSpace, Ingram, and Smashwords. Levine has written a useful, no-nonsense guide that will save writers tons of money and hours of frustration.'' --Helen Sedwick, author of Self-Publisher's Legal Handbook: The Step-by-Step Guide to the Legal Issues of Self-Publishing

''I always recommend The Fine Print to any author who is considering self-publishing. . . . It's a reality check and an education for the savvy author.'' --Patricia Fry, executive director of Small Publishers, Artists, and Writers Network (SPAWN)

''Invaluable . . . Levine's ten years of experience, first as an author, then as a publishing company CEO, provide him with an understanding of the needs of authors, combined with an insight into the publishing industry, top to bottom.'' --Mick Rooney, The Independent Publishing Magazine

Since 2004, Mark Levine, author of several editions of The Fine Print of Self-Publishing, has been making sense of the perilous and changing world of self-publishing and service providers for indie authors. The first edition of The Fine Print was published back in twelve years ago and it was the first serious book to directly tackle the contracts of many known self-publishing service providers, as well as providing insights on pricing, quality, depth of service, and critically defining the core things every author should look for when choosing self-publishing services. Though many books have been published over the years, few have ever become essential reading for authors in the way Levine’s The Fine Print has carved its way into the self-publishing community as the go-to essential toolkit.

A lot has changed over the years and self-publishing has now experienced a mass explosion. You can’t talk about the publishing world (trade houses, small presses, or the service provider industry) without mentioning the growth and impact of e-books. Notwithstanding all that, Levine founded Hillcrest Media Group, operators of Mill City Press (a US-based provider of services for self-publishing authors), and a number of other publishing imprints. When the fifth edition of The Fine Print was published in 2014, Levine chose not to present as much detailed and in-depth breakdowns, point-by-point, of service providers. The fact is, service providers change their publishing packages and services as the market itself changes and develops. The fifth and the latest editions of Levine’s book have become essential primers for self-published authors rather than exposé’s of the good, the bad and the ugly of publishing service providers.

Each edition of this book is better than the last. Not only does it give you helpful info about service comparisons for pay to publish service providers, it gives some advice in marketing that book. What I really loved about this edition was how it approached the leading DIY publishing platforms from the perspective of the novice author in regards to the technical learning curve just being the beginning and addresses the "other little things" that someone can miss that can make or break their book's success.

The Fine Print of Self Publishing thoroughly explains the pain staking process that is the navigation of the self- publishing world. I had scoured the internet looking through blogs and reading articles and trying to piece them all together. Countless hours were spent digesting the information only to read one slightly or vastly different opinion on the next. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of information without a life-guard. There had to be a much more detailed and central location for this information. Alas, after searching for books, going back to the “old fashioned way” of doing research, I found this gem. At first the 6th Edition was sold out but it was definitely worth the wait. It came back in a stock a few days later and I purchased it without hesitation.

The information and knowledge that the book possesses far exceeds the actual price of the book. There are professionals in the industry that are charging 20 times more than the price, just for answering some of your questions and giving their insight. This book answers them all; what to look out for, what is fair pricing, royalties, and distribution. If its part of the self-publishing world, it’s in this book.

The author includes easy to read graphs inclusive of different self-publishers. These graphs cover royalties, POD Pricing, etc. The author also includes a checklist on the self- publishing process, which I found very helpful.

The book covers contracts, which we all know is where all the lies hide, the author goes through the more prevalent contract terms and breaks them down to be easily understood. He helps you understand “The Fine Print”

If you are thinking, even remotely, on writing a book and getting it published, I highly recommend this book.

I have read lots of stuff on the subject of self-publishing, most of which generated a lot of confusion. So glad to see a piece that lifted the fog. The book sets out all the info I need about preparation and publishing of my book, including pricing information., the questions to ask competing publishers, etc. Well written. And wonder of wonders, the author is willing to answer questions. Hoorah.

Please read Mark's book before making any decision regarding self-publishing. The Fine Print will save you a lot of time and money, along with increasing your knowledge of the industry. It is full of pertinent details you need to know and broken down easily for the average person to comprehend. I read this book while writing my manuscript and it helped me tremendously with the self-publishing process.

I thought Mark Levine had covered it all in the edition I read in 2012. But Wow! This is now the readable encyclopedia for all authors who are contemplating self-publishing there work. It is a must because as Levine clearly states, the writer will not have a lawyer to negotiate contracts; therefore s/he must be educated to the facts. I cannot recommend it enough. (I strongly suggest getting the paperback as it should be open on one’s desk for easy access.)
