Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Review
While much has been written about the killing of Osama Bin Laden by an elite group of Navy Seals--and much more will be--no account could be more meticulous and balanced than this fascinating report from the author of Black Hawk Down. Riveting but evenhanded, dramatic but thoughtful, Bowden’s account is the deeply sourced story of what was going on in the heads of our government leaders, as well as the Al Qaeda leader known in the intelligence community as “The Pacer.” --Sara Nelson

A New York Times Bestseller
In-depth interviews with Obama and other insiders reveal a White House on edge, facing top-secret options, white-knuckle decisions, and unforeseen obstacles. . . . Bowden weaves together accounts from Obama and top decision-makers for the full story behind the daring operation.”Vanity Fair
A book one with sweep and sophistication about a pivotal, secretive operation . . . smart and measured, long on transparency and short on speculation. . . . Bowden enjoyed exceptional access, but wasn't captured by it. . . . Bowden’s lens is wide, encompassing Obama’s evolution as a politician and the peculiar influence of bin Laden . . . Where the book shines is in Bowden's reconstruction and refined analysis of the intelligence operations that turned up bin Laden's location. . . . The book also succeeds in its artful portrait of Obama as commander in chief. . . . compelling drama, and Bowden has captured it with skill and style.”Seattle Times
How all the president’s men and women finally nabbed the world’s most wanted terrorist is truly a stunning story. And while parts of it have been told, Barack Obama himself has confided in only one writer about all the details. And he is Mark Bowden.”CNN
The first book, and, to date, the definitive one, that looks at the Osama bin Laden raid from President Obama’s perspective. The death of the man responsible for the 9/11 attacks is a fantastic story. It has goodies and baddies, a long, slow build to the climax, exotic locations and lots of hardware. . . . Bowden [shows] how success in the raid last May was the culmination not just of a decade of often tedious data-crunching by the CIA and other analysts, but of a vast and ongoing effort within the American security establishment and government to develop a new range of capabilities. . . . How the Americans finally got their man is an extraordinary tale and Bowden does it justice.”Guardian
"A superb storyteller, Bowden captures the tense drama accompanying the final months of the bin Laden hunt, even as he underscores the quiet, essential work of years."Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

The Finish leverages access to key White House, military, intelligence, and foreign-policy officialsincluding President Obama himselfto get behind the intricate story of how SEAL Team Six was sent to Abbottabad, Pakistan, to kill Osama bin Laden. . . . Bowden would seem like the perfect person to tell the bin Laden story. . . . There is an excellent setting-the-record-straight section at the end that has been missing in other volumes.”Washington Post
Bowden . . . reveals the details of the planning, but knows when to pull back from a close focus to give the wider view of what was at stake for President Obama, military planners and the Navy SEALS team. . . . [His] experience as a reporter and author shows.”Fayetteville Observer

Wow. I have read several of the authors books and they were excellent. In this book he decided to get political. The first 80 percent were dedicated to how smart Obama was and how his brilliance brought Osama to justice. The next 15 percent of the book was objective and chronicled the finding and killing of Osama. The last 5 talked about how brilliant Obama handled the aftermath. Most of the book was difficult to read, which was surprising for this author.

I wish I would have checked the reviews before buying this book. After reading 24 pages, I looked at the reviews to see if I was missing something. Not. A terrible political piece. What a disappointment from the author, whom I had respected.

This book is a glorification of Obama’s effort to take credit for years of effort by other brave men

I have read most of this author’s books, but was forced to throw this one in the recycle bin. It is pure political propaganda and a paean to Barack Obama who had nothing material to do with the long-overdue assassination of an evil Muslim figurehead. Basically an opinion piece by a politically-biased former “journalist”.

I only liked this book, am a big fan of Mark Bowden. His work with Black Hawk Down, and Killing Pablo are his best. Those two books were objective and thorough. This one is more a history lesson with much of the current Presidential Administration Input and thoughts. I did not need the history of the life of the President, and it took the focus off the book which was the efforts by the intelligence community to find U.B.L.. To that end, if you are looking for a book about how Bin Laden was found and taken out, this one is not it. I do understand that much is still classified, but there are far better books out there that explain the demise of U.B.L. better, and leave the politics out.

After having read other accounts including No Easy Day this provided a ending to the story.
Thanks to the author for his details and to the men and women in intelligence and military circles for their dedication and perseverance to completing the task of finding and killing Osama bin Laden.

The only thing missing from this book are details on the action at the compound itself, -which is available in the book No Easy Day, and the 'Shooter' article published in Esquire magazine. But this book is supreme in every other respect and needs to be read as part of an overall appreciation of the build up to the action proper in Abbotobad. So if you are only interested in what happened during the raid itself, this book sheds little light, but not only is that information available elsewhere, but this book more than makes up for it with truly outstanding details in every other facet.
The two books you need to read to get the gist of the raid are this one, and No Easy Day. Also, Google 'Esquire Bin Laden Shooter' and theres an excellent report from another Seal on the raid. Avoid the book Seal Target Geronimo, its full of wrong information.
No single book contains 'everything worth knowing' about what happened.
This book has a lot of great information, just like No Easy Day does. Even as good as the movie Zero Dark Thirty is, it has its own agenda as well, and its own glaring omissions. The movie is so afraid to offend the arab world, it glosses over events that happened during the raid like UBL's body being dragged down the stairs by the feet (not yet in a body bag) or even just the kill shots themselves.. simply not shown at all. More time is spent in the movie showing Maya crying at the end than UBL. No single source contains everything worth knowing.

a well written book easy to read for the average adult. Author Bowden goes into details on the politics of the hunt for UBL including sections on Obama and his outlook on hunting down UBL as well as his promise to go into Pakistan if high value targets found there, and the use of drones to kill terrorists in Yemen and Pakistan. The actual raid/killing of UBL is not as detailed as the book written by the SEAL who wrote under a pen name and was on the raid and fired shots into UBL body killing him. I am always interested in any book about the killing of UBL and details of the operation, due to my obsession with the termination of the terrorist who financed and coaxed the hijackers into attacking America on Nine Eleven. I want to know a lot about how justice was done and UBL was killed cowering in his bedroom hiding behind his youngest wife.

Mark Bowden's latest book, "The Finish," details the 10-year effort to find and deal with Osama Bin Laden. Unlike Mark Owens/Mark Bissonette's earlier "No Easy Day," Bowden's book focuses on the actual hunt for the terrorist chief, detailing how the American military and defense communities retooled themselves to deal with a terrorist enemy that was everywhere and nowhere at once. President Obama receives some kudos for keeping OBL's capture/killing a top priority and for his unusually forceful decision to enter Pakistan to carry that out. But he also receives some censure for taking too much credit for the mission's success.
Unlike "No Easy Day," the Bin Laden raid comprises only one chapter of "The Finish," which, according to Bowden, draws upon Owens' account for details. Both should be read, along with Esquire magazine's recent article, "The Shooter," in order to begin framing an opinion on what happened that night. Two facts emerge -- one, there was practically no chance bin Laden was going to be taken alive; and two, the "fog of war" is a real thing. We have three accounts, maybe four if you count Zero Dark Thirty, and maybe three different versions of what happened.
Bowden, a professional journalist and author of "Blackhawk Down" and "Killing Pablo," among others, is always an entertaining writer. However, one is somewhat left with the impression that this book was rushed to print in reaction to news events.

Good author, but

I bought this on the strength of Bowden's earlier book, Black Hawk Down (which was amazing). I should say that I haven't read the similar book, by Mark Owen, recounting the mission from one of the men who was actually there.
The problem here (and it is an unavoidable one really) is that, as in the real-time finale to the film Zero Dark Thirty, the mission to capture/kill Osama bin Laden was little more than 45 mins in length from start to finish (excluding flight times). To attempt therefore to convey the minute-by-minute excitement of the mission itself in a similar style to the 2-3 days of Black Hawk Down, leaves a sizeable chunk of this book left to fill. It is perhaps understandable, and entirely reasonable, that this book should begin by providing some context, and for the first half to two-thirds it explains the build-up to how OBL was tracked to the compound in Abbottabad. The problem is that you are really waiting for the chase and the excitement that the title of the book perhaps falsely suggests this book is really all about. In reality, "The Killing of Osama Bin Laden" describes little more than 1 page of this book. But that could never have been transcribed into anything longer, so it is no fault of the author that the denouement (which will, of course, be known to all who start this book before they beging reading) can't help but feel a little like an anti-climax, and an insufficient reward for those who have persevered with the inevitably duller earlier parts of this book.
