How do I use Finish Powerball Tabs?
Unwrap the tablet and place it in the dispenser for best results. If the tablet does not fit, consult the dishwasher manufacturer or manual for advice. Use one tablet per wash load. Optimal water temperature is 125 degrees - 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Finish Powerball tabs dissolve completely in the wash cycle.
- Pre-soaking Powerball: Bursts into action to scrub away tough food residue like baked-on lasagna and dried-on oatmeal.
- Powerful Cleaners: Remove even the toughest coffee and tea stains and gently scrub your dishes and glasses sparkling clean.

Other information from Consumer Report's ratings (Summer of 2010): Avoid all liquids/gels. As a group, they performed worst. Powders are at best middling performers.
Update: Consumer Reports has an update review in the summer of 2012. If you have hard water the Finish Powerballs are better than the Quantums. The Quantums drop to number 3 in hard water, leaving the Powerballs number 1 by default.
Update 2013: The October Consumer Reports puts Finish Powerball at #2, just behind the rather more expensive Cascade Complete ActionPacs. The Cascade cleans pots better, while the Powerballs do a little better on dishes. With one exception (Cascade Complete Powder), avoid powders and gel detergents. Powerballs are probably the best combination of quality and price out there. If a low price is very important, consider Kirkland Signature Dishwasher Pacs.
For me, the benefit of using tablets is the no muss no fuss dispensing of detergent. These are hard, pressed tablets of dishwashing detergent individually wrapped in little packages. You're instructed to place the detergent in the dispenser of your dishwasher (which is a shallow tray with a lid that closes).
Inside each package were both large chunks, small fragments, and powdered dust. Because the tablet is damaged, rather than being able to open and drop the tablet in the dispenser without touching it -- i'm forced to either try to squeeze the mangled detergent pieces out of the package or -- if i'm unable to wrestle it free ultimately i have to use my hands to fish the fragments out of the package and then arrange them in the dispenser in a way that it will actually close. (Otherwise when I try to simply drop the tablet in the dispenser the long end of a large fragment will stick out and i'm unable to close the dispenser door.
At times when a tablet was very powdered it'd squeeze out of the package under force and miss the dispenser entirely. To me, when damaged as this product was delivered by this vendor on Amazon -- it lost all of its ability to simplify dish washing and instead became a burden. It would be easier to use liquid, or powdered detergent than these tablets.
After a couple months of using these broken tablets, arranging them carefully in the soap dispenser (felt like I was playing the game Tetris) and having to wash my hands afterward to remove the soap residue from all this manipulation -- I bought the gel packs instead and threw away the rest of this broken, frustrating detergent.
I use two tablets for every dish washing.

Not sure why but these just don't work for us. We have a new frigidaire washer. Water temp is good. Cycle would run complete but we'd open the washer to a terrible, musty, gross... Read morePublished 9 days ago by NicinCO
Finish has always been a great dishwasher soap. The powerball helps with the cleaning and my dishes seem to dry faster and without spots, compared to the store brand liquid soaps.Published 11 days ago by Karen faulkner
