A friend of mine heard me griping about my worn out dishwasher (15 years old) and how I have to completely wash my dishes by hand before I load them into the dishwasher and even then, the dishes barely come out clean.

Yeah, pretty boring. That's what two guys were talking about.

Anyway, he told me to check out these Finish cubes. I had seen them in the store before, but they looked kind of expensive and I'm sure my wife would have yelled at me for buying something so gimmicky. But since Dan recommended it, I'll blame it on him.

I live in southern California just north of L.A. Our municipal water tastes pretty good, but it's really hard water. I think I'm the only guy on my street who's too stubborn to pay for a water softener service (that's a different story though).

So I gave these things a try.

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. I know we're all busy, but take a minute to read the instructions. The most important tidbit that's easy to overlook is that you shouldn't store these under your sink where it's damp. Store them someplace else where it's dry (and out of reach of small kids).

From the first wash my dishes came out so doggone clean I couldn't believe it. I'm in charge of doing the dishes in my family and these clean dishes made my eyes start to water up (kidding). They're really beautiful though. Our plates feel like someone waxed and polished them. Our cups and glasses are all spotless.

At every meal I see my family reach down and touch their plates just to feel the new smooth finish.

The real benefit comes after a few loads.

If it seems like dishwasher soap isn't working as well as it used to lately, you're not alone. The main reason is this is happening is because the phosphates in laundry and dishwasher detergents tend to be wonder chemicals when it comes to scraping off grease and food. Unfortunately they don't biodegrade very well so they pollute waterways and starve fish of oxygen. Many states are banning phosphates and detergent makers are having tough time creating a suitable replacement.

It just so happens I was asked to review this non-phosphorus formula at the same time I have the Finish Powerball tablets that contain phosphates (8.7%). Comparing the two products I find they both clean remarkably well. As you may expect, the phosphate recipe cleans tough baked on foods better but the non-phosphate version works well on all but the toughest dried on foods. Plus I noticed the white residue that would sometimes show up on pooled water areas (like the bottoms of coffee cups) no longer happens with this new formula. In short, you only need to pre-scrub things like foods stuck on baking dishes or grilling utensils, the new formula handles the lip-prints, silverware, plates and other dishes fine without pre-rinsing.

Now to interject some personal opinion, I believe many models of dishwashers are complete junk. After having lived in many apartments, rentals, a few condominiums, and houses that were purchased with built-in appliances, I've found that a) the dishwashers are almost always cheap, and b) the dishwashers do not clean well. Glasses still had lip-prints on them, forget trying to clean anything stuck to dishes. I was literally washing everything before they went into the dishwasher.

After using this product for a few months, I noticed that my white and off-white dishes were discoloring. It is almost as though they have a drippy nicotine-like glaze on them which I am, so far, unable to remove. Today I spoke to their customer service department, and I was told that I should put the dishes through a wash cycle using Finish Power-Up All-In-1 Booster (they will send coupons) with no other detergent or rinse aid in an attempt to remove the brown residue. The rep advised that I could soak each dish in undiluted vinegar for several minutes as an alternative. The customer rep also told me to dump my box of 60 Quantum packets (I have at least 50 remaining) and use only Finish products with no gel component in the future because, "they don't have this problem."
As it was obvious that the manufacturer is aware of the issue, I asked that they reimburse me for the 60 unit pack of Quantum as well as providing coupons for the Finish Power Boost recommended as a remedy. I was told absolutely not - that they could do only one or the other - coupons for the remedy or reimbursement. I persisted, and after I was left on hold for 10 minutes or more the representative said that I would receive both.
Don't use this stuff unless you have dark colored dishes, and you don't mind knowing that you are eating/drinking from dishes and glassware with a yucky residue on them.

I used the remedy prescribed by the manufacturer (Finish Power-Up All-In-1 Booster). I am not happy that I had to invest in another finish product to fix a problem that Finish caused, but IT WORKED! My dishes no longer looked as though they've been glazed with nicotine (ugh). I filled the detergent cup AND placed two tablespoons of the booster in the bottom of my machine.
